Is this EVERYWHERE???

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Ok, I am probably making a mountain out of a molehill but.....

My CC here in MN boasts of 99% pass rate of the License exam - Ok pretty good BUT what they do NOT tell you is:

out of 75 students who start - only 25 finish

IS this NORMAL?? Over HALF of students do not finish? Now, my school has changed the prerequists (sp?) so that you HAVE to do all the basic classes before you can even apply, but STILL!!!!

I have one more semester to go then I can apply and I am already freaked!!!! Thinking about either quitting my job or hiring a MAID!!! I personally like the maid idea!! LOL

My job is VERY easy - overnights at an Assisted Living center - mostly Alzheimers pts. I can study for a couple hours there and I only work the weekends.

Ok, I will stop panicking and go back to studying Anatomy!!

Hey, the maid idea sounds great! Actually, I think most NS lose about half before it's over. I think a lot of students don't know what being a nurse is all about. Up until NS, it's all lectures, lab, tests, bookwork, studying. When they start clinicals, some students realize they don't want to touch patients, clean messes, and be exposed to unpleasant smells, sights, and sounds. Also, not everyone is thick-skinned enough to put up with difficult instructors.

Ok, that is better!!! Not to brag, but clinicals are where I do better! I can put books into real life (sort of). Basically, I am more hands on smart rather than book smart.

Yup, my school has a 100% nclex pass rate, but they said they lose a lot of people before the end of the year (lpn program). It makes me really nervous, but I know I can do it!

I've heard the same things too..I just look at it this way.."thats them, and this is me, I'm not a quitter I've worked wayyyyyy too hard for this".

Best wishes to us all!!

I'm in an ABSN program, and the class that graduated before me started with 27 people, and graduated 24, with a 100% NCLEX pass rate. In my ABSN class, we started with 25, and lost 2 so far. We graduate at the beginning of May, so my class hasn't taken the NCLEX yet. Hopefully we will have a 100% pass rate on the first try also.

sounds familiar. our program director said that in previous years, they switched over to the system of requiring 8 pre req's completed before applying and then basing admittance on gpa of pre req's. we have no wait list. each year begins new. she said the reason they switched was to counter losing so many students, and over the past few years it seems that it has worked in weeding out folks who really aren't prepared to meet the expectations.

RCTC is doing a "point" system - the better GPA - more points

the more re req's - more points

It seems to be Ok I guess - I am just freaking because I am barely passing A&P1 - have three kids and an OTR truck driving hubby. Plus, we would like to move OUT of MN and can not do this until I graduate - but NO PRESSURE HUN!!! LOL

Thank you for all your replies. I did FINALLY not only put my foot down and told everyone to help - but I also asked for help which come to find out are two different things!!!

So, I will just learn to bend a little and quit thinking I am superwoman!!

LOL
