Sounds like a facility-specific definition. I would think that a cardiac recovery unit does post-operative care for short-stay cardiac procedures that don't require ICU admission, such as cardiac caths, ablations, stents, other minor cardiac procedures. My hospital called this the CPRU†(cardiac procedural recovery unit). Bypass/open heart patents would be recovered in the CICI.
Provide immediate postoperative nursing care to patients undergoing surgeries including coronary artery bypass grafting, thoracotomy, valve repair and replacement, left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation (Heartmate, Heartmate II and Heartware), right ventricular assist device (RVAD) including the Tandumheart and Impella. Manage patients with ventilators, pulmonary artery catheters, arterial lines, intra-aortic balloon pumps, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), open chest, and vasoactive IV drips.
This is a description I was given of the unit...one person called referred to the unit as CVICU and someone else CVRU. I was confused considering they both work in that hospital wouldn't they call it the same thing. Led me to believe what if they were talking about two different units?? Can't find any info about the hospital's units online.
LOL...Why not call the operator and ask if they even have a CVRU? If you get transfered to CVICU ask if this is the same as CVRU...you will then have your answer. If you end up getting transferred to CVRU ask the person who picks up is this the same thing as CVICU you will have your answer. If any one ask if youre looking for a patient just say I am giving one of their family members a ride just making sure I am meeting them in the right lobby.
