I am an RPN in Ontario, I am interested in taking the online course through Athabasca university in Alberta. The university's program gives you a degree in Nursing, BN. I have called the CNO and they are telling me that in order to be recognized as an RN in Ontario you must have a BScN. However the CNO told me to check with employers and univerisities, I am continuing to look for more information before I register for this program at Athabasca. I spoke to the head of the Nursing progam at Athabasca and they told me this online program definitely only gives you a BN....

Confused ?!

BN and BScN are basically the same degree.

It seems the person you spoke to at the CNO did not give the correct information, Ontario's has recognized nursing degree BN programs, one example is Humber http://www.humber.ca/program/bachelor-nursing-bn

Thankyou for your replies. Dishes, I was told they are pretty much the same degree as well, however the BScN is the bachelor of science, which is what I am told Ontario requires, and the BN is a bachelor of Arts. :o) have a nice evening.

Both degrees give you eligibility to write CRNE.

CRNE = RN

Personally, I am surprised that CNO is telling you that they do not accept BN education, because they do, as is evidenced by the Humber grads who are approved to write the CRNE. It is possible that the CNO does not recognize Athabasca University because it is not accredited by Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing and it is not on the CNO's list of approved schools, (I don't know, you will have to verify this with CNO).

Once you double check and if you find it is true, CNO will not grant permission to write the CRNE, then you can apply to CARNA to write the CRNE, as CARNA will grant permission to Athabasca grads. Following receipt of the Alberta registration, you can apply to CNO for Ontario registration.

However, I guess you have to ask yourself, is it really worth it to take a program that will result in paying for registration in two provinces?

I really think the OP needs to get back to CNO and find someonelse to talk to.

A friend that is nearly finished AU's degree told me that Ontario had a batch of nurses coming out in the new year to do their clinicals under some sort of funded education plan. I hardly think their employer (or whoever it is footing the bill) would have them go through an "unapproved school".

Go back to the horse's mouth and find a supervisor.

I know Athabasca grads in Ontario. I agree...ask to speak to someone else at CNO. Then, when you get the correct information, record who you spoke to and the date and content of the call so that if there is a problem later, you have back-up.
