Okay i am really frustrated. I currently go to Cal State LA which a quarter system. Yesterday i met up with a counselor at LACC so i can apply to their nursing program. Unfortunately the counselor told me that my science credits would not count because i have quarter units instead of semester units so it wouldn't transfer. When i found that out i was mad and frustrated because if wanted to join their program i would have to take the science core classes all over again at a semester college. He also told me that other community colleges in the los angeles area like, lavc, la southwest college, trade tech, etc would also say the same thing. However, i had a friend who applied to the los angeles southwest community college and east la community colleges and they were both in the la district and she took EXACTLY the same science courses that i did and got into those schools. I dont know if the counselor was BSing me or what. Now i dont know what to do.
now i am looking at the schools that i am planning to apply to if my science core classes even transfer.
Another problem is i did not do so well on my first TEAS score and colleges i applied to are looking at the first score. Since i didn't do so well they are telling me to take remedial classes at the school i took it and my school Cal State LA does not offer a remedial plan for students bcuz i already called the nursing office and everything. Ugh.
i do not know what to do and i really want to pursue nursing but if can't find a way then i might consider changing my major.
is there anyone who may have similar problems? what did u guys do?

WOW that's a tough! Don't know an answer. I took my science classess from schools with semester . But, hang on there...however, one tip...nursing school study is very strict. Try as hard as you can to do well in science classes because you are going to find that most classess are much harder than those prerequisite that you have taken before. I graduated from LAHC about 2 years ago and there was about 50% of my classmates didn't make it through the first time. So, if you find your TEAS score is not good enough, it's a sign that more attention is needed on your course work. Getting into nursing school is highly competitive as you have learned before, but graduating from nursing school and working as a RN require more energy from you. But, if everyone else has done it, there is no reason why you can't. Just put extra effort. BTW, I am doing my RN-BSN in Calstate LA. Great school! Good luck and we shall all study hard...:)

I had no problem when I transferred from a school with the quarter system to a school with the semester system. The area where I was lacking, I just was advised to take a course at the new school to bring me up to speed. My science courses transferred hunky dory. This repeat everything advice sounds off base to me. The equivalent should be acceptable, just like mine was. I would try to talk to others in the system to get the correct information.
Smilenurse1: thanks for the tip i will totally take it into consideration. hopefully i can take the teas test again at cal state la without having the remediation.....they only offer it once a year btw. i will not give up.
Caliotter: that's sooo weird! what school did u ended up going to instead. I've been thinking i should apply outside the la area. I did pretty okay with my science courses. although, i had a D on my micro class then i repeated it again and managed to pass it with a passing grade.
The counselor at LACC said that my anatomy, physio, and micro were not transferable because they were not 4 units in "semester units"
when in cal state la all of those 3 classes were 5 units each.
then he did this math thing where he said to divide 5 to 1.5 = 3.3 he said it's supposed to be 4.
im like okay... i did call the one of the other campuses he mentioned that my friend got accepted into which was weird cuz we both took the same science classes and they told me to meet up with a counselor first....maybe things changed since last yr...

OP, it sounds like the counselor may have been misinformed. College counselors in CA use the CAN (California Articulation Numbering) system at (ASSIST website http://www.assist.org/web-assist/welcome.html) to determine which courses at one school "articulate" (re: are equivalent to) courses at other schools. Also, the poster above showed how to translate from quarter to semester units. All you have to do is go the site above, select the preqrequisites that LACC uses for it's nursing program, then select CSU-LA and the site will show which courses translate. It'll show the CAN course number, and each institutions individual course number. It's easy, just let the website do the work for you
oh yeah i totally know that website. i took a class at lacc a yr ago and i went to this website what class was transferable to what.
there is something fishy about it.

I went to a community college in the San Fernando Valley and was accepted at CSU LA in their generic nusing bsn program. From what I know, community college classes can be substituted for university classes--when you look at the description, it will say whether it can be transferred to a CalState or CSULA or both university systems.
I had to have my jr college transcripts evaluated and the lower division classes substituted for CSU LA's classes. My A&P, Chem, micro, psych, sociology, lifetime psych, nutrition, statistics, math all had equivalent classes at CSU LA. If the jr college classes are equivalent at the university, then lower division science classes taken at CSU LA should be acceptable to a community college. If not, I would want to know why.
Granted that CSU LA is a quarter and the LA community colleges are semesters..that is taken into consideration when they do the equivalent conversion. If I remember correctly, the way they deal with semester versus quarter is the unit conversionn. At the university quarter system the units are more but they multiply the semester jr college system units by a certain number to get an equivalennt number of units.
You need to talk to a nursing department special counselor at the community college you are trying to enter.
If I were you, I would go check out the courses that are required at the community college and see if the undergraduate courses have equivalent courses at CSU LA or if the course is acceptable to CSULA. If so, then the counselor did not know what he/she was doing. There is a way to check equivalent courses on line...but I have forgotten how to do it.
TEAS - I don't know what to tell you. We all have to take the college readiness test--even if you have had college classes. Did you get the book from ATI and study it? I think the TEAS testing company, ATI, may have an onlinne class or something like that. You may want to check that out. All I did was study the TEAS book. I did not find the exam that difficult and was 2nd to finish, I even went over my answers...but I only got an 88. I thought I had aced it...go figure. One of the problems I saw was students who were english as a second language had a more difficult time.
If I were you, make an appointment with another special nursing counselor at any of the Los Angeles Community Colleges that has a nursing dept and bring your unofficial transcripts for evaluation. See what this person says. You could even do their work for them. List the prerequisites for their program and list the classes at CSULA that you took. Give the grade, date taken, and the units. This is what the counselor will be looking for. Sometimes it is easier if you hand them everything on a silver platter. Good luck.
There are TEAS tests all over the place. You need to find one; no sense waiting a year. I took mine last year and just called ATI, paid $10 and they sent the results to the person in the nursing dept who accepts the TEAS scores.
