Is anyone applying to SMC (Sacramento) ELMSN program Spring 2010

Published

Hello!

Is anyone applying to SMC (Sacramento) ELMSN-FNP program?? I'm taking one more pre-requisite course this Spring. I'm also preparing to take the NET test too. I thought that maybe we could keep in touch while we're preparing for admissions. And perhaps support eachother during the wait =)

Hi future SMC friends! I just became a member of allnurses, and am so exited to meet you all. I will be applying to the ELMSN-FNP option for Spring 2010. I'm so nervous already! Anyway, hopefully we can provide some support for each other.

Also, does anyone know how important clinical experience is to getting in? I won't have any time to volunteer before applying. :crying2:

I have the NET book...got it brand new from ERI...paid the $30 and then decided not to take the test. SO anyone that wants it let me know..

Hi mirasoph!

Welcome to the forum! This place is great isn't it? :wink2: Awesome to hear that you'll be applying to Sac's FNP program. I will be too! I'm excited and nervous. It's good to hear someone's interested in the same program as me. I hope we can keep in touch thru the admissions process. :)

Anyways, as for your question. I've heard different stories. My friend got into the Oakland-SMC program. She had zero volunteer experience, but a heart :redbeathe of gold. I've heard ppl say it was their interview or it was their personal statement. No one really knows...but I'll keep my fingers crossed for the both of us.

How's everything going so far?

Hi Saral,

I would love to keep in touch through this process. :yeah:

I have quite a bit to do to get my application ready (well, actually everything). I'm still working on my prereqs-

A&P this semester, Micro in the summer, and the second A&P in the fall. I've approached my professors about letters of recommendation and have those lined up; and I'm taking the Net on April 16th in Sacramento. I'm trying not to get stressed about everything, and take 1 day at a time. I sure hope it all works out! :D

How are you feeling about things so far?

Now I'm having second thoughts about SMU after seeing this news report...

If entry level jobs are so scarce, I'm wondering if it is worth it to spend so much money?

Any thoughts?

I've heard about this...We are just in a really bad state right now. Everyone is having a difficult time finding jobs. I know that Kaiser recommends nurses to have 2+ years experience before hiring. There are always many different places you can work to get your foot in the door so to speak. During school, you'll be placed in diff. hospitals & clinicals..I would recommend doing an EXCELLENT job where ever you are placed, and hopefully that'll score you a job after graduation.

Nothing is certain nowadays..but all we can do is look on the bright side of things. There are many other nursing schools (waaaay cheaper) if you don't want to spend all the money at SMC.

To be honest, it really depends on you and what your long term goals are.

My goal is to become an FNP and work with underserved communities. So, I'm still going for it.

I take the NET in Oakland this Saturday. Wish me luck!

Good luck on whatever you decide!

Hi,

I'm also applying for the Spring 2010 ELMSN program. I took the NET this week. I'm pretty sure I aced Math but the reading--don't even ask! I really want to get in!!! I'm scared.....My stats aren't that good even though I'm going to get a BS in Biology at the end of this semester :(. Do you guys know if it's possible to get in with decent grades but good NET scores? Another question I had was that I have a few chem. classes that I took during Undergrad, and I know one of the science pre-req they want is Chemistry---do you know which one they take into consideration for the GPA. My Gen. Chem I grade was a C and Gen. Chem. II was an A....my luck, they probably count the Chem. I, right?

I just took the NET last Saturday in Oakland. It wasn't so bad, but I was sooo nervous for some reason. I wanted to do really well, but I don't know...we'll see. The math portion wasn't that bad, but I didn't have enough time for the reading portion. I thought there were only 30 questions for 30 minutes, but it was actually 35 questions! So, the last 5 questions, I had to just guess bc I was running low on time :( (I wasn't the only one, the student next to me did the same thing) We'll just have to wait and see.

How's everything else going for everyone? How's everything coming along?

I have all my rec letters in place, I'm workong on my personal statement still, and getting ready for JULY 1st. Does anyone know of an alum I can talk/speak to about the Sacramento program? I would like to know/hear what I need to get ready/be prepared for.

Congrats on making your first step to become a FNP. I also want to become a FNP. Don't let your grades discourage from achieving your dreams. As for admissions, no one really knows how students get accepted. My friend got into the Oakland campus with zero volunteer experience, but decent GPA and she entered when the NET was not that important.

I suggest going to talk to the admissions counselor. She is very nice and she even sat down with me to figure out my GPA in all my pre-requisites too. I also have BS and she was able to help determine which Chem classes accounted to their program. I had one year of chemistry and one year of ogranic chemistry. (I think they just take the best) out of those classes, but you'll have to double check on that.

Good luck to you!

Hello all...

anyone else anxiously awaiting a response from SMU's ELMSN-FNP program? I just fedexed my application along w/ recs and transcripts last week. I hope everyone is well and good luck!

Specializes in Trauma ICU, Peds ICU.

I wouldn't get too nervous if it's taking awhile. I graduated from SMU and the administration is notoriously slow to do anything.

Thanks. Were you in the ELMSN-FNP program or Acc. BSN program?
