Is it acceptable to cancel a job shadow opportunity?

Published

I recently had a new grad interview with several different managers from different units and specialties. I was asked to shadow from all the managers after interviews. Over the last two weeks during shadowing I have found where I want to go. Should I continue to go to the scheduled shadowing for the other units knowing that I will not accept a position with them?

I don't want to waste their time but I also come from the frame of mind, do not ever turn down a shadow opportunity if it is offered even if you don't want it because it is just bad practice especially when the managers are all in the same hospital system. (Different locations). So my question is, is it appropriate to cancel a scheduled job shadow post interview? Thoughts? TIA

Unless you have a job offer for the position you want, I would continue to go on the shadow days. If you already secured the job then you can call or send a email politely declining the shadow opportunities because you have decided to persue an opportunity that is a better fit for you. Good luck!

I agree with BabeinBoots. Follow through with the shadow opportunity unless you have accepted another position and then politely thank them, but decline their offer out of respect for their time. The only other scenario would be is if you had an emergency doctor's appointment or something and asked if you could possibly reschedule and say something like "I want to be at the top of my game to really absorb everything I can from this opportunity." If it's a matter of simply not wanting the position, think of it as a way to network and I guarantee you will learn something or a new way or doing something at least. If your unemployed anyways, you have the time - go for the shadow. The job may seem more appealing after the you shadow too. I've been on many interviews that I thought I LOVED the unit until I shadowed and vice versa. I'm so glad shadowing existing, otherwise I would've been in some really bad moods for months/years if I took the positions I loved based on the interview and what I thought I knew about the unit.
