Irish Nurse and American Citizen

Published

Hi everyone,

As like most here I am looking for some help and advice on nursing in NYC.

Basically I was born in America but have lived in Ireland since I was 18 months old. I have a degree in both General and Childrens Nursing and just under a years qualified experience in a very busy Childrens ED.

I am planning on moving to America in May of this year but I am really only getting myself sorted now. Bad I know but seen as I already have the passport and the social security number I figure that bought me a bit of time :)

From looking through some of the posts already I see it is quite difficult to get work in nursing at the moment. Cant say the situation is any better in Ireland to be honest.

Would the fact that I have experience in such a specialized area make getting a job any easier??

Also I have started to do the CGFNS application and basically just have to pay for it and get certain stuff notorised. I am not in a huge rush to start nursing in America and the plan is that once i get my licence I will do the NCLEX over there. My question is that if I brought the relevant documentation over with me and handed it in, in person would that speed up the process at all of getting my licence?? I don't know if this is even possible. I will have applied for it before I go. I know i previously said I wasn't in a huge rush to work but if would speed it by even a couple of months that would help. Don't want to get to use being unemployed :)

On another note I am travelling with my boyfriend who is an Irish citizen and he has applied for the B1 or is it B2 visa with the hope of getting it for 6 months we are just waiting on an appointment with the embassy. Will the fact that he is travelling with an American citizen aid or inhibit his visa process?

Has anyone ever been in a similar situation or have any answers or advice I would really appreciate it.

Thanks A Million

CVS will be required and will take on average 6 months, you can not take anything in to NY BON they will only accept initially from CGFNS your CVS stuff and they will apply to your nursing school for it. Do you have clinical and theory hours in Paeds, Mental Health, Obstetrics and Adult? these are requirements as US is general trained. Once the BON has your CVS they meet once a month I believe to assess International applications and decide whether to allow you to sit NCLEX or not

Your boyfriend may find it a hinderance on getting a B1/2 visa with you being a USC, more so also if the country is on the visa waiver scheme as generally if under a certain age group (retirement) it is hard to get B1/2 unless you have lived together for over 12 months and have proof. Even then it is no guarantee he will be admitted for 6 months

Thank you for your reply, sorry I am only seeing this now. I am heading to Boston now instead of New York due to family ties I have there. So I'm guessing I will have to change the CGFNS application to Massachusetts instead? I have clinical and theory hours in Paeds and Adult, but through our degree we did have theory on Mental Health and Obstetrics. However I only have registered clinical experience in Paeds. Do you know the hour requirements for MH and Obstetrics? I imagine they are covered well I'm hoping so.

Also about my boyfriends application, we have lived together for the past 18 months and have proof in the bills being registered in both or names. I'm beginning to think this will be more of a vacation for the moment....really need to just get to the embassy and speak to someone.

Anyway thank you again for your reply :)
