Published

Hi, I struggle with alcoholism and constantly go to work hungover. I was reported on Friday and drug tested. I'm scared. I was excited when I heard ipn was an option, but I've now read nothing but horror stories about it. I haven't heard back from anyone yet so I've been out of work all week. I'm scared of lose my job and have no way to pay. My coworkers love me there but there's nothing they can do if I have a problem

I understand your position all too well and can tell you the following things:

1) Monitoring program is not easy but it saved me. Sometimes it takes getting caught to realize how bad of a problem one has and to do something about it.

2) It is expensive to be in monitoring because at some points you cannot work and drug tests are pricey and frequent but I qualified for SDI while in treatment so it worked out.

3)  Maybe you could talk to your job about going to treatment and work out an agreement before committing to a state monitoring program.  I wish I had before it went too far.

Know you are in a safe place here and a lot of us are in similar situations and can offer support, guidance and a place to let it all out when needed. Please fell free to message me if you want more specifics. You will get through this /hug

Thanks. It happened on Friday. I got to speak with the HR lady on Monday over the phone for a bit and then she was supposed to call me back Tuesday but didn't. I spoke with my manager Wednesday and said HR would call me yesterday but I haven't heard anything yet. Waiting for that phone call is just so stressful. I've been pretty good about not drinking throughout this, but the stress made me slip up yesterday.

I remember the stress I felt when waiting for that call, it was just awful. Like yourself I was expecting to hear back very soon BUT this didn't happen. It took in fact about 2 weeks for the drug screen to process and after that is when I started hearing back from people. It would have been nice to know that ahead of time, the not knowing what was up for weeks was really hard. I wanted so badly to make my own calls but at the same time, I realized it was better to not draw attention.  You will get through this but try not to let the uncertainty right now consume you.  Some employers have what we called an EAP (Employee Assistance Program). You call and they offer a lot of services that might be helpful and that you are entitled to. It also looks good to see that you reached out on your own. Right now, be strong and take care of yourself OK?

Thanks I finally got a hold of them and I have a meeting with HR at 10:00 on Monday. They mentioned EAP so they're going to evaluate me. I'm hoping I can skip the whole inp thing but I guess it depends on my answers to their questions. given my living situations that might be a little too much for me

wishing you all the best.... take care of you right now

Thanks you guys. It looks like I'm being put in another program that's not as expensive. I was also sleeping with a doctor so I got like flagged for sexual misconduct as well. And why does what I do when I'm off the clock matter? I know exactly who reported me for that and I'm pretty pissed off I don't know what to do

Take care of yourself first and foremost. Take advantage of the services and personal time to get yourself into a better place physically, emotionally and all that. I'd be pissed too about people bringing my personal time into question but now is not the time to deal with that.  You are being given a chance to get help, give it a try  and work on you ?

So, some places have HR policies that you must disclose if you’re having a “personal/intimate” relationship with a coworker.  If the doc is a actual EMPLOYEE of the hospital, VS contracted/consultation privileges, that could make the difference.  Additionally, if neither parties reported, they are both is violation of such a policy exists.  The MD should be held for sexual misconduct as well.

I mean if you were pulling a greys anatomy situation and screwing in the on call room while both on duty and “abandoning pt care”, that’s different.

that is discrimination if one employee is held to the standard (if one such exists) and the other is not.  I would suggest that either your “partner in crime” be held to the same standards and reprimanded by either the hospital/hr or reported to their medical board, as well.  If not, I would be firm and state that this is discriminatory and therefore that should be dropped entirely.

unless you two are in love, just quit seeing each other.  And if NOTHING happened on work ground, while on duty, that should hold merit.
