Intro vs Science Major Pre-reqs

Hi everyone,

I've been a lurker on here for some time, but this is my first post. I am in my 3rd semester of community college and just starting my nursing pre-reqs. I like planning ahead, and so am looking at the courses that I'll be taking for summer and fall. I will start applying to BSN schools in January 2018. My question is, do courses for science majors look better on applications than intro courses? For example, one of the schools where I want to go to, UTMB, does not specify what type of courses to take, just that they have to be with a lab. I am already in BIOL 1406, Biology for Science Majors. I also know that I won't be able to apply to UTHSC-Houston since they do not take intro courses if i do go the intro route. Should I continue with the science major courses or take the intro to .... ones? Thank you for your advice!

I took science major prereqs because they were the only courses available at the school I attended. No positive impact down the road for me. I would still recommend it, (as long as you can get good grades), because you never know what you might want to do in the future. I am thinking particularly about a CRNA program where those courses might make the difference, or maybe a switch to medical school, or some other avenue. You always are better off by exceeding requirements rather than just getting by. As a rule, a person may have a harder time getting the "intro" or "fundamentals of" courses approved for transfer credit, than the year-long Inorganic, followed by Organic, followed by Biochem, etc., for example, sequence type of courses. They can't say your courses were not stringent enough when you are in class with the future research biochemists of the world.

Thanks so much gor your reply. That was my avenue of thinking as well. If I'm already in one of the science major classes, I might as well take all of them. Thanks again!
