I have been working private duty for 3 years, and my dream has always been to work ER/trauma. A few weeks ago I was offered and accepted a job at a rehab hospital. I am scheduled to start mid-May. Today I was called for and completed a phone interview with HR at a local medical center, and she will be forwarding my resume to the nursing manager in the ER. I am hoping to schedule the next interview for next week, which I took off to let myself relax before starting in the new facility. Not to count my chickens before they hatch, but how bad will it look of me to start working at the rehab and then resign to follow a dream? Is it wrong of me to start training and precepting, hopefully knowing that I will be leaving shortly? And yes, my fingers are crossed that I am offered this ER spot.

It's not optimal, but it happens all the time. If you do get the ED job, just be honest & adhere to the policy for your rehab job. If they require a 2 week notice, be sure to follow the policy. Since you're still in orientation, they may decide to cut you loose immediately. You could also try to soften the blow by asking to remain as PRN for the rehab facility if they want you to. You'd probably be able to squeeze in a shift or two a month after you start your ED job.

I work in rehab and this happens ALL THE TIME. Those places know most young or newer nurses are there for the experience and go. They also know that nursing schools are spitting out new nurses every 6 months or so. There's probably tons of nurses behind you waiting for a job. I would RUN to the ER if you get that job, and don't look back! 😠but staying on prn isnt a bad idea in case you ever want to pick up shifts...but only if that works for you. Good luck!
Thanks! I'm waiting to find out my orientation schedule so I can call and set up the interview. I just don't want to make myself look bad so early in my career.
