Interview??!!

Published

Alright....

First off, this board is GREAT. I appreciate everyone's input as I have learned a lot by reading some of these posts.

I will be attending my first interview in just under two weeks. This first interview is at Newman University and I cannot express how anxious/excited/thrilled this makes me feel. Actually, I am scared to death. Any advice????

Thanks in advance for all replies!!

Athlein,

great post. sycophant? that was hilarious! the word just struck me funny. do you think they sometimes put the students on the defensive if they get the opportunity just to see how they handle adversity?

when i interviewed (years ago) and they had asked me why i wanted to be a crna, i said some things but the last thing i said was in regard to witnessing emergency intubations in the icu and how i wanted to be the one to do that (I had already talked about caring for the pt preop, interop and post op) and this one guy actually rolled his eyes and said to me 'do you realize its TEAM work?' and i just looked at him and said 'yes i do'. although he seemed quite reactionary, the others were pretty 'flat affect' but seemed somewhat impressed that I wasnt frazzled or defensive or intimidated by that. i got in! i left feeling quite unsure though. unfortunately i chose to withdraw after a year (i know, i know) but i have plans to go back when the time is right so that same reasons dont come up. (long story) so now you guys know my secret.

my point is, condifence and how you handle yourself is most important, IMHO. they also like to see that you have other interests other than work. as Athelian said, a balanced person.

Good luck sandman! BTW, like the song from metallica 'sandman'? I love it. Let us know how it goes.

Well, I found out yesterday.......and I am proud to announce that I was (finally) accepted to a program in PA and will be starting in January!!!!! Rhon1991,

Sycophant - great GRE word, isn't it?! Very handy to have in the vocab, especially when speaking with one.

Sounds like the "defensive questioning" tactic is relatively common. Interviews are going fabulously well, and then, WHAM, one of those questions in which no answer is satisfactory, so the hapless interviewee must struggle to respond in a politically-correct-yet-evasive manner! And yes, I was that hapless interviewee last year. I remember stumbling over some inane response. Must have been a slow year for applications, because here I am...

I was doing well until I was asked what would I do If a particular drug infiltrated. I thought about it for 5 seconds and responded that I would call the pharmacist for guidance, and then the attending. I know it was not the answer the interviewer was looking for, but she could not tell me that it was the wrong answer. Like Athlein stated interview the school as well. Good questions are "what are your passing rates on the boards." Try to search for the previous discussions on this topic because there are some really good posts on what was considered a negative interview by one student whereby, according to the student, the interviewers were rude, and see the responses she got on this BB. Like Athlein said leave the anxiety at home. I was sitting in the lobby reading a newspaper when the director's secretary came to get me for my interview. As we made our way to the elevator she told me that she would have never known that I was the person that was interviewing because she could usually pick out the anesthesia student from a mile off. I asked her why is that? She told me that they are usually sitting as stiff as a log wearing a two piece suit with an expression on their face that says it all. We both started laughing because here I was dressed in career clothing, but not in a suit, reading my newspaper quite casually. I then told her that I have four kids and that I don't get the adrenalin rush that I use to get once upon a time!

Athlein,

you read my mind, yes, i thought what a great gre word! i recall seeing it actually. i also thought it was a slow app year the year i got in... lol
