Interview questions to get in the nursing major

I have recently applied for the SON at WVU and will hopefully be called in for an interview next month. I got a late start as I am a senior presently and will have completed all the PR this semester as well as other courses. I am trying to prepare for the interview as I am not good at taking interviews and would like to hear some questions you was asked or if you give interviews, questions you ask. Also any extra help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

Why do you want to enter nursing (hint: the answer is NOT "to help people")?

Why our school and why now?

What do you feel is your best/worst quality?

Describe a conflict/problem you experienced and explain how you handled/solved it. (Hint: this is not about fighting with your best friend over some guy.)

That's all I can think of right now! If I think of more, I'll post them!

I only had to participate in one interview in my round of applications (BSN/MSN program where you had to declare your specialty in advance) and for as much as I can recall they included:

  • Describe how you feel our program is a good fit for you, what will you contribute to the cohort if accepted (past experiences, positive characteristics, leadership experiences)
  • In your opinion, please share a percieved problem with the healthcare system in the US today and how you believe generally we can take steps to improve the problem (I would imagine this is testing how aware you are of the health care situation in general and current controversies)
  • Would you percieve your public speaking skills to be strong?
  • Why do you desire to pursue advanced practice nursing in this specialty?

However, as a disclaimer, our interview (at Johns Hopkins) was a bit more of a discussion format, with much opportunity for the candidate to ask many questions of his/her own. It definitely was not as structured as most seem to be.

As you will never be able to guess all of the questions ahead of time, my best advice is to think of some general ideas/statement that you would like to share about why you desire nursing, to provide evidence that you indeed have thought of the complexities involved in pursuing a program and also that you are dedicated to do what it takes to succeed if they select you.

Why would you like to be a nurse?

What duties do nurses perform (I guess they want to make sure if you know what are you trying to get into)?

What makes you a good student for our program?
