WHY DID/ WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING?
I fell into PH by accident. I was completing my BSN clinicals for a community health nurse class when the previous nurse had to resign. I applied for and got the position. Luck and opportunity coming together.
I am a community health nurse for a small rural county health department
Very much, I spend a lot of my time doing communicable disease surveillance and investigations. Epi is a big part of community health.
Both, I spend a great deal of time in the office, but we do have times where I set up immunization clinics in the community area and also health fairs.
Love my job, so much more my pace than hospital positions. But then, I think it has to do with what a person is comfortable with. I'm not a fan of floor nursing because of the environment...politics etc. Loved the nursing part, just wasnt down with everything else associated with the hospital. So for me PH is perfect.
I am in charge of surveillance monitoring, communicable disease investigations, I am the STD nurse, immunization and wellness nurse, I assist in a women's clinic once a month, and have a lot of influence in which direction I choose to concentrate my efforts in the community. My director is an MSN prepared nurse and is very nursing oriented. I am very lucky to have the position I do and I work with terrific people.

I am also a nursing student, and need to interview a Public Health Nurse for my class assignment. Does any PHN have a little time to spare?
