I have two separate teaching projects due for my school internship to graduate and get my school license. I have to do a teaching lesson to staff and a separate teaching lesson to students (middle school aged 7th & 8th grade).

I have no idea where to start. I was wondering if you all could please give me some ideas and maybe if you had to do it what you guys did.

side note: I am very overwhelmed in my life right now. 4 kids- 3 of them is 3 and under 1 is a newborn. Plus we’re trying to put our house on the market and buy a new house. Oh and I work full time and my husband works basically two full time jobs and coaches. Sport schedule for son is heavy. Help is limited. Not trying to throw a pitty party, ahh just ranting. So I’m still not sure how I am going to pull it off. I am not a good talker and choke when I have to get in front of ppl also. Yay me.

Staff: pediatric diabetes, asthma, allergies - for all of these you can cover s/s, interventions, when to call 911, add a youtube clip from the appropriate advocacy org.

Students: Dental hygiene, puberty (maybe pick one topic like body part naming and changes), nutrition/physical activity, maybe a psychosocial topic like self-esteem (my school does this with MS girls), smoking/vaping.

These are a few training/classes I do with my staff and MS kids. We have a dental group come in for dental hygiene, and it's more in-depth than what the little kids get

Am not a sch nurse, but have a suggestion/word of advice.

If there is any way to somehow focus on one topic and adapt it for whatever use, DO IT!!!

I kind of became an expert on Pickwickian syndrome. Used for nsg care delivery (obesity and sleep apnea factor in) . Also was able to branch out and utilize it for advanced A&P hypercapnia and acid/base changes. If I recall, I even used it for a paper I did on astronaut space travel (weird I know, but it fit!). I also did papers on narcolepsy and ARDS so my foundation basics were easy to adapt.

I don't expect you to be seeing too many narcoleptic or Pickwickian students in your workplace. So that might not be a good topic for you!! But I could see something like allergies (am thinking like PP jnemartin!).

One topic - same foundation, but tailored for your different audiences.

Make it easy for yourself.

I agree with amoLucia and think an easier way to go about this would be to pick one topic and adapt it for each audience...this will save you time and effort when trying to get both things done. Some school-related topics I can think of that would be relevant to both groups are:

  • vaping
  • head injuries/concussions
  • reasons to visit the nurse office
  • bullying
  • appropriate/safe technology use
  • hand hygiene

Are you already working in a school and do you have access to staff ahead of time? I am thinking if so, you can send out a little survey and ask if there is a topic they are particularly interested in learning about. Does you instructor specify that it has to be done with the entire staff of a school, or could it be a small group. I am guessing if you have to do MS (7th/8th) maybe pick a small group from each grade so you can sit around a conference table with maybe 6-8 people total to feel more comfortable for you and also make it feel more intimate. For the students, Vaping is HUGE- my own son is in 8th and we hear about it all the time. There are a ton of articles out there right now, especially with all those stories ion the news about the kids who have been hospitalized with the lung infections. Good luck.
