Internship in a hospital in th U.S.

Hello to everybody!

My name is Emily, I'm from Germany and I will finish my nusring studies this year in November.

After my exams I want to do a 4-6 months internship in a hospital in the U.S. to learn the different aspects of medical care and the work of the nurses in America. I would like to expand my knowledge and experiences.

I sent my application to many teaching hospitals all over America, but I rarely got an answer. My problem is to get the right contact to the right contact person who can help me. That's why I'm asking you if you have any idea to help me.

To work as an employee is not possible for me without making a lot of medical test in engish because the german nursing system is very different to America's. What I want is just an internship where somebody shows me around in different parts of the hospital and where I can expand my knowledge.

So if you have any ideas or tips for me just tell me.

I suspect this will be difficult to arrange especially for the US. There are many US new grads looking for work so a hospital taking on a new grad that will have to go through state requirements first who only wants to intern for a few months will be hard to find

You will not qualify for an internship as you will not be licensed or legally qualified to be an employee in the US. If your school has an international exchange program with any US university or colleges you might be able to take part in an exchange program. Another possibility is to see if a US hospital has an observership program, usually observership programs are only open to internationally educated physicians, but you can check to see if they are open to nurses. One of the requirements is for applicants to be proficient in English.
