Hi everyone,
I'm HIGHLY interested in international travel nursing - specifically the UK and Australia. Does anyone have experience being a US trained RN working in another country?
Is there specific travel companies you would recommend to place you overseas? I feel like within the next year I'd love to be in Ireland or England and experience a nurse culture and learn new things from a different country.
If you could tell me what kinds of licensing obstacles and tests and screening you go through for international travel positions, I would be very grateful. I can't find a ton of info online about the how-to's, so I figured I'd ask my fellow nurses for help!
Thank you in advance!

I've worked in the UK, and applied for NZ but never completed the license. My experience was a long time ago, and I think you will find that a BSN will be effectively required. Both of those countries are quite concerned about your character so you will need written references. Neither requires a board examination, it is just about credentials. The process will take some months.
There really is no advantage in having agency help, you need a license first. You can navigate online to the licensing agency to read instructions first hand. I took a quick look at UKs requirements just now and was amused to note that you now have to take an English proficiency test even if it is your first language. I remember the joke from My Fair Lady where it was said that they haven't spoken English in America for years. The agency has changed their name as well from UKCC to NMC.
Generally when you get a job in another country, you have to have the job in hand and a work permit before you can enter, which was the case for me in the UK. NZ is a rare exception to that rule, probably because it is so remote. That is awkward of course, and technically you are not allowed to look for work on a visitors visa. But you really don't have to worry about that initially, focus on getting the licensure.
Just like travel nursing here, don't do it for the money, do it for the experience.
Oh, and everything I've read about going to Ireland is don't bother trying, it is next to impossible from America.

NZ is a place that interests me. Love what I have read about the culture and geography.
