International nursing and Excelsior College

Published

Hello,

Does anybody have any information about getting a job internationally as a nurse who has graduated from Excelsior College? Has anyone graduated from Excelsior College and practiced nursing abroad? I'm currently a LPN in the U.S. and getting my RN through Excelsior College. I would really like to either move to South AFrica or the UK. Just curious if other countries accept RN license from Excelsior College.

Unsure about the answer to that question but I do know that most other countries require a BSN. Are you getting your BSN through Excelsior College? More than a handful of states have issues with Excelsior College here in the US. How it is viewed internationally I have no idea. It is a good school though. Good Luck

You may want to check out threads regarding working in the UK. I have read that it is extremely difficult to get a nursing license and work visa there. They give preferrence to citizens if UK and other EU countries before they would consider hiring a foreigner. That coupled with the fact that jobs are in short supply you may face great difficulty in trying to work there. I agree with NurseCubanita, you would likely need your BSN to work outside the US.

Furthermore, while most other countries require a BSN for licensure, there has also been discussion on this site (I have no personal knowledge or experience with this beond what I've read here ...) that not all US BSNs are recognized by other countries -- some countries (and I believe the UK may be part of the group, but I apologize in advanced if I'm wrong) don't recognize US accelerated BSN degrees because they have a specific definition/requirement of how long a nursing program must be, and the US accelerated BSN programs aren't long enough to count. That raises an interesting question -- in countries that have that requirement, how would they look at EC's program, which is not formal nursing study in the conventional sense, and is largely self-paced.
