International Medical Volunteering for Free or Low Cost?

Hello, I am interested in becoming a medical volunteer abroad and would like to participate in some sort of surgical or other type of mission. Most of the research I have conducted involves organizations that require you to pay a significant amount of money and for room and board while you are volunteering.

I have heard of other organizations that are free or charge a flat fee of $500...something of that nature. I am wondering if anyone knows what they are? Like many, I can't afford to shell out 5k and take two weeks off of work.
