insulin drip protocols

Does anyone out there have any experience with insulin drip protocols? Our organization is instituting one and it is looking problematic in that the issue of hypoglycemia and it's risks have not been fully appreciated by the authors of this protocol.

I would appreciate some opinions you all may have.

We frequently have insulin gtts on my med/surg unit. Hourly accu checks done by either nurses or aides. Adjustment of the gtt according to results. It is my opinion that it is something that should not be done on the floor. At least not when your one insulin gtt pt is one of 7 or 8 pts. But somehow we manage to maintain the gtt w/out problems.
