hi !

i'm a 30 frenchman seeking to work in US as paramedics but i would like to know if i have to get a special training cause i know american studies are different than french, and how long it is (for example in france to be a RN we have to study for a period of 3 years and a half, with a final exam to be graduate)

thank u for your help and sorry for my english.

fred

PS : i would like to study and work in nY city or in MA. (boston, providence..)

Paramedic class is 9 months to a year and a half depending on where you go. You need to have EMT certification first and you may be allowed to challenge that test if you already have experience. If you don't have any Pre-hospital experience you will need to take the EMT classes too which are about 6 months.

Pittsburgh has a wonderful program through UPMC in Oakland. EMTs from NY city take paramedic classes there as I have know a few of them.

There is national certification in the USA now so taking the paramedic class then the national certification test will allow you to work in most states.

I hope this helps you.

thank u for informations. i will graduate as RN in france in 2005. do u know they would accept my apllication as a foreigner, considering it's difficult in this time (thank u mr chirac-asshole!)to obtain a visa? do u know if they have a website? possibility of financial help?

thank u again,

fred.

PS : perhaps you think it's strange for a french nurse to ask for a paramedic course, but i love emergency and rescue.

You could also do as I do. I work critical care (ICU right now) and I volunteer as a paramedic. There are many hospital based helicopter teams around also. A few years experience as a nurse in critical care and you could have both fields in the same job.

I was on a specialty flight team for 4 years and loved. It dosen't pay as well as other specialty areas though. Plus when you are not on a transport flight you are usually assigned to an ICU or ER for helping out with admissions/transfers/ etc. One flight team here in pittsburgh does community outreach when they are not on the primary flight team. Teaching CPR, going to fire and ambulance open house events etc.

Conglobata: You will be required to take the CGFNS exam as well as pass a series of English exams to be able to get a Visa Screen Certification. This is required of any health care provider wishing to practice in the US.

If you have any further detailed questions that you need answered you can send me a PM.

Good luck with your studies.....................
