Hi, I am a nursing student in Columbus Ohio. My husband has been offered a job in Herndon Va. All I know is that its really expensive to live in that area. In Columbus Ohio right now, we pay $1100 a month and that gets you a 1950 sq.ft. 3 bedroom 3 floor townhome in one of the best towns with the best schools. I have looked online and see that $1100 in Va, gets me an effiency. lol. I have a 3 yr old daughter as well so thats out. My question to fellow students and future colleagues, where is a safe, good area to live that has good school?? Are there any nursing schools nearby?? What are beginning salaries for local nurses??

Northern Virginia is an expensive area, but the salaries for starting nurses I've heard/read are about $24 an hour depends on the hospital. The schools in the are are really good, so no matter where in NoVa you live your daughter will get a great education and further down the road there are great colleges in this state as well. As far as nursing schools there is NVCC (Northern Virginia Community College) George Mason, Marymount...then you can travel a bit further into DC and there are great schools up there as well.
Living wise...honestly you can drive through areas and find nice communities. They are all around. On the news these days you always here about Maryland and parts of D.C. but things happen, even in Virginia.

House prices in most of the areas are down. We bought a 2 bedroom condo (near INOVA fairfax) and I know people rent them out for around $1600-1700 a month. Prior to that we rented a 1 bedroom apartment in Arlington near Court house and was around $1200 a month. Closer to a metro, the more $$$$. There are a lot of hospitals in the DC/MD/VA areas. Were in Falls Church now, but once I graduate, were off to the Columbia MD region. Away from DC, outside the beltway, house prices are better, and a shorter commute for my wife. Lots of hosues on the market. Around 2010/2011, suppose to be a huge influx of people into the military bases around here because of BRAC
