#1: describe # of years/type of educational experience

16/university bsn

#2: describe the diff roles in which you've worked in health care

staff nurse, private duty nursing, hospital and nursing home supervisor, hospital unit manager, iv therapist, instructor in medical assistant program, medical coder

#3: how is professionalism incorporated in your role as a nurse?

i served on many committees and am a member of numerous professional nursing organizations. i also held two national specialty certifications in nursing areas of practice.

#4: what advice can you offer to a person beginning the nursing profession?

practice what you learn in school. your instructors will be your future colleagues so don't be afraid of them. pay attention to everyone because there is always something to learn from them. just when you think you know it all, you don't know enough. always believe what people tell you even if it sounds preposterous--you'd be surprised what turns out to be true and what turns out to be lies. treat everyone, and i mean every single person you interact with, with respect and courtesy--i've worked in 2 hospitals where nut jobs came in with guns to kill people who had been nasty to them. the main characteristics that bosses look for in professional employees are: initiative and autonomy, dynamism and energy, a positive outlook, responsibility, the ability to provide excellent customer service, the capacity to learn, productivity, high adaptability and flexibility, leadership, team work, tolerance to pressure, analytic ability, and professional development.

#5: what advice would you offer for a nursing student as i work towards completing my degree?

hang on to syllabi. stay organized and keep track of deadlines. if you have a problem with procrastination learn to deal with it now. never be afraid to ask questions or clarify deadlines on an assignment. if an instructor isn't making something clear--ask for clarification. sit in the front of the class. volunteer to do procedures. don't worry about what the other students think of you--that was high school; this is the rest of your life. don't throw any of your nursing textbooks away because you'll need them for reference when you are in your first years of nursing as a new grad. be aware that all through nursing school the instructors are compiling a file on you about your performance so they can give prospective employers for your first rn job the only clinical recommendation of the kind of rn work that you are capable of doing, so act appropriately in clinicals--getting your first job out of school depends on it. since i see you are new to allnurses, check out the sticky threads on the nursing student assistance forum and the general nursing student discussion forum because there is a lot of helpful information there.

1.RN-

new grad RN/ADN program.

2.

activity director for 200 bed mentally ill nursing home, CNA/personal assistant, med tech in hospital, current staff RN for ortho/neruo/medical patients.

3.

Professionalism is expected in my nursing role by the standards that I am held to. I am expected to honestly care for patients, give them medications that are ordered, communicate to physicians needs and patient wants or things that may be needed to improve patient status. Families expect professionalism to communicate what is going on with the patient. Patients want and deserve friendly and caring nurses who professionally tell them what is going to be done, or what they need to do to improve their recovery.

4.

I would recommend to someone starting the nursing profession that they keep a open mind on how to care for patients. suspend judgement. Patients come to you when they are sick, and not at their best. Expect patients to sometimes be upset, short, or angry...it may not be at you, but at their body. Be a open pad. Take what they give you, expand on it, and treat the person....not the disease.

5.

Nursing student wise, I would advise you to ask questions always....if you are unsure about something, ASK! would you rather be thought of as curious, or cocky? If you give a med or do something wrong, committ an error, etc....be honest and uprfront. You may get into trouble, but part of being a professional is admitting when you've made a mistake.

You're welcome!
