Infant with reflux-Nsg DX help

Nursing Students Student Assist

I'm doing a careplan on an infant (2 months) with Reflux. The mother said he has not been able to keep formula down. He went from 3 ounces at a time to 1. He is a good weight for his age/size. He's 11 pounds 5 ounces.

Anyone have any ideas for a nursing diagnosis? He really doesn't have any problems. If you need any more info let me know.

I would think along the lines of a "risk for" diagnosis if you cannot find anything in his assessment to support a problem. Or if you feel mom is not understanding the infant's true condition, what about an education/knowledge diagnosis? Think it through and let us know what you come up with!!:D

you are not understanding what a nursing diagnosis is. a nursing diagnosis is a nursing problem. when you say that this infant has no problems you are saying that he has no nursing diagnoses and that can't be correct, especially if this infant has been admitted to the hospital. if that were true then the nurses would be doing absolutely nothing for this child. what we nurses do is assist people in accomplishing their adls. and i know that a 2-month old infant is not capable of performing their adls on their own. so, their adls are being done for them by the nursing staff. look up the pathophysiology, signs and symptoms and complications of reflux. at a minimum this baby is at a risk for aspiration. what other care was being done by the nurses for this baby even though it seemed "normal"?

He isn't in the hospital. I saw him in a pediatric clinic. He's really perfectly fine, he's just been having some reflux problems. Other than that, his mom is taking good care of him. She doesnt work, she's with him all the time, she's pretty much got it all under control. You make a good point with aspiration. Thank you for that. I will work that into the plan, and try to add some teaching points in as well as maybe a risk for less than body requirements due to the reflux.

Be careful how you diagnose and word a teaching diagnosis. The infant is the patient, not the mother, and it is not feasible to teach a baby anything.
