My husband is medically retiring from the Army very soon. It will most likely be in the next month. We are relocating to Indianapolis and I'm wondering how the job market is for LPN's. I'm starting the process to endorse into the state for my license so that I can try and find a job right away. I will work anywhere I'm not picky. I plan on doing my LPN to BSN through ISU also. I'm hoping to start that in the Spring 2013. Any help would be great.

I feel the job market is pretty good. I work as an LPN in an Emergency Department just 10 months out of nursing school.

Prior to the ED, I was working at a prison in plainfield. The prison setting is great if you know how to take command of a situation, can work on your own, and are proficient in ur ability to assess a pt.

Pay for both the ED in a hospital setting with less than 2 years experience is approximately $14.30 / hr , shift diff after 2:30pm of $2.50, Weekend pay is 20% of base pay. Night shift is $1.25 extra on top of the 2:30pm shift diff

Very difficult to obtain, but very very FAR from impossible (look for more suburban hospitals)

I was offered a job at a methadone clinic passing methadone from a milk shake machine, assessing for withdrawals, substance abuse, and blood draws. Pay was $15.75 / hr flat fee. Great hours! 3-5 days a week. Some twelves some eights.

Medium in difficulty to obtain. It just has to be at the right time.

Prison pays approximately $14.35 for full time and PRN is $18.50. Shift diff is $1.75 after 4pm. Nights are an additional $3.75. Weekends are one dollar additional to base. Working with crude, uneducated population. Lots of great wound care and much trauma to be expected as well as lots of deception and manipulation so you better have gr8 assessment skills and be able to decipher who is a faker and who isnt. Don't trust the offender's verbal history or stated pain level. Only trust lab values and documented medical history from the chart.

Easy in difficulty to obtain. 3 days a week. 12 hour shifts.

Jails pay approximately $18.25/hr fulltime and $24 for PRN. Similar to the prisons, but you get more of the whiney clientele b/c they haven't adjusted to incarceration or are still intoxicated, spitting on you and then wake up hung over the next day in jail realizing their mistake and beg and plead for you to take pity on them.

Easy in difficulty to obtain. 3 days a week. 12 hours shifts.

American Village LTC and Rehab centers begin at approximately $16 dollars +. Unfamiliar with shift diffs. Was never one to work with a non-ambulatory population.

Medium difficulty to obtain.

Home health agencies generally pay between $15 - $19 for LPNs. Never desired to work there.

Easy in difficulty to obtain

Assisted Living are paying upwards of $19.00 for the more suburban / carmel / fishers areas. Easy med passes. Mostly ambulatory.

Medium in difficulty to obtain.

Hey, This is everything I've learned of and I hope you benefit from this sharing of knowledge. Best of luck.

Oh and to emphasize... a lot of those rates are just rates for ppl like myself who have less than 2 years of exp under their belt.

I did apply to the jail system about a week ago. I haven't heard anything yet. thank you for the information it is very helpful. I have had my license since 2007 but I've mainly done LTC and rehab so I don't know if that will help for trying to get a job anywhere outside the nursing home.
