Hi, I am a Licensed Practical Nurse, I obtained my LPN in 2010. I worked for 6 months in a nursing home and had to stop because my husband became terminally ill. For 2 years I took care of my husband whom recently passed in July 2012. I am now in the process of getting my life back in order I moved from VA and now live in FL, I am back in school seeking an RN degree thru SPC. Is this a wise thing to do or should I look for another nursing program? Also I would like to work now so I am looking for a refresher course before I get back into the field. I know SPC has a refresher course but I would have to arrange a clinical site on my own. Are there other refresher courses that offer hands on training?

I would definitely go with a refresher course that offered a clinical component and make sure it is approved by the FL Board of nursing. If you check the community colleges, they often have refreshers with a separate clinical that is arranged through the school. FSCJ has one for both RN's and LPN's. I am not sure what they have down in Tampa but the Board should have a list of approved refresher courses. If I was an LPN right now and wanted to go on with nursing, I would do a BSN program because that is what hospitals are wanting to hire now because they all want magnet status. If you do a refresher, you may also be able to work as an LPN while you are in (RN) school.
Thanks my goal is to continue on and get my BSN. I did look into the refresher courses and have found they are mainly for RN's. but I'm still hopeful and pushing forward.
