I need some information and references fast! I need to know how long we can leave IV sites in....I know it used to be 72 hours but recently I heard it was now 96 hours.....if someone could please let me know the new standard and a link to where I can go look at an print the information I would greatly appreciate it. We have to ammend our policy to go live on our online documentation project and "Go Live Day" is sneaking up on us!
Thanks so much!

Shellsie,
In the last few days or so I had seen something similar at work but can't recall specifics because we don't deal with longer-term IV access as a rule (I work flight and ED--Heaven help us if we have our patients that long!). But your question intrigued me and I searched...you might give this a shot: www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/rr5110a1.htm. You can also go to the CDC's Web site (www.cdc.gov) and use their search function. The terms I used were "intravenous replacement". They have a lot of good epidemiological info and maybe one of their articles will help.
Good luck!
