impaired practice

I would like to hear from anyone who has worked with an impaired nurse or MD, or if you have been impaired yourself. I am doing a half hour seminar on "impaired practice."

Several! A couple of years ago I saw a doc that used to be a medical resident and went on to become an attending. I hadn't seen him in a while and when he came in the first thing I thought was "he has AIDS". He was caught with drugs a few months later. I know of a few docs and nurses with a problem. PM me if you want more details.

Worked w/ an OB/GYN doc who would be on call at the local bar and we would call him there when his pt.'s were pushing. He would warn you not to call him too soon or he'd murder you! He'd waltz in just in time to catch. Even though he was reported several times, he always came up smelling like a rose, even though we all knew he was half in the bag at delivery time. Intersting, he never had a bad outcome w/ mom or baby!

I think I know when a staff comes in hung over, its just a feeling though.
