greetings fellow nurses!!!

i will be moving to Portland, OR next month.

i was just wondering about the salary range in the area.

i am a Registered Nurse (RN) with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. i have 1 year working experience in san jose, ca.

how much should i get? i don't want to ask for a lot of money. i just want to receive what is fair based on the current salary rate in the area.

any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

Dear Rookie,

I too am planning a move from Bakersfield, CA to Portland Oregon. I went looking for work at Tuality; and, they said at the time that my pay rate would be comparable to my pay rate in California. That is twenty six dollars hourly which includes a sign on bonus! Now I don't know if you've looked at the neighborhoods around Tuality, but it looks a little like Orange County...not very appealing for someone looking for a Bay Area beautiful neighborhood, which does exist in Portland...and I'm sure that is the driving force for your move.

Good luck and keep me posted. I so want to know how you handle the weather, clouds and all! But in truth, I would take clouds and rain over drab, dusty Bakersfield any day...besides, clean air helps one to think!

Starting in January 2008, the base pay for an RN with no experience working day shift will be just over $28 / hr at Providence Portland Medical Center. The other Providence hospitals in the Portland metro area are comparable. I believe evening differential is $2.25 / hr and night differential is $5.00 / hr. You get $1.00 / hr for working weekends. However, if you opt to work every weekend you get $10.00 / hr for each weekend day you work.

At Legacy, I think starting wage for no experience is around $28/hr as well. Night diff is $5.30/hr and weekends is $2/hr. As for experience, I have no idea. I do believe that expecting close to what you made previously is not at all a bad thing. I know there are differences related to cost of living expenses here vs. CA, but I think it works out in the wash. But your results may vary...

As for neighborhoods, yes, around Tuality are a lot of developments that all look cookie-cutter similar, but there is quite a bit of variability out in Hillsboro. Plus you can go to Scappoose (further west, on the river) or closer in to Portland. But if you are going to work at Tuality, I would recommend living near there. Having to commute out there would be a pain...in my opinion.

I know my floor at Good Sam is looking for folks (l;ast time I looked)...PM me if you're interested.

Cheers,

Tom
