i'M CONFUSED

hEY GUYS-

I WAS JUST WONDERING IF ANY OF YOU COULD GIVE ME AN OVERVIEW OF WHAT ALL IS INVOLVED IN MICROBIOLOGY. I'VE HEARD IT IS DIFFICULT, BUT IT IS MATH DIFFICULT OR MEMORIZATION OR WHAT? I'M BAD AT MATH, SO I'M HOPING ITS MEMORIZATION. TO ANY OF YOU WHO HAVE TAKEN THIS COURSE, COULD YOU PLEASE SUM IT UP FOR ME? THANKS A MILLION!!!

ERIN

I don't remember any math in micro. It's mostly that there are a lot of microbes out there. I actually didn't find it to be all that difficult. It's just a matter of organizing the beasties.

the thing I found most difficult about micro (aside from the 90 y/o professor who mumbled incoherantly) was the biology aspect-- Krebs cycle, energy production, etc. In my program biology wasn't a pre-req, but it was for the pre-med students, so in a class with pre-nursing and pre-med, the pre-nursing students were dazed and confused simply because we didn't really have the biology background everyone else did.

If you think it is really going to be a challenge I suggest considering a basic biology course first.

Hi! I'm taking Micro this semester. There has been no math involved. We have lecture for an hour and fifteen minutes and lab for an hour and forty minutes (both twice a week). Lab has been a lot of fun, as we have had to identify different forms of bacteria through a variety of tests. Among many things, we've had to culture our own fecal swabs, urine samples, and throat swabs. Another thing we've done was brought in a water sample to test for the presence of E. coli. The water had to be from a spring, well, cistern, etc., as long as it wasn't from a municipal drinking water source.

Lecture, however, is totally memorization. And lots of it. After a couple of weeks of class, several of my classmates discussed the fact that we thought the class was easier than we had been led to believe (of course, this was before the first test. ha-ha.). When we asked the teacher, his explanation was that the concepts are not hard - there's just a lot of info to be learned. And nearing the end of class, I completely agree with that assessment.

We were required to take Anatomy and Physiology 1 & 2 before being allowed to take Micro.

I thought I would hate it but I loved it..Very interesting planting things and watching them grow....Bacteria are not at all boring...At least, I didn't think so...I also am not a math fan and don't recall that being an issue...

I don't think I've ever heard of a nursing program that does not require biology. Wow. I would have been sunk without that background.

no math involved just lots of information about stuff you can't see with the naked eye....lots of memorization..i thought i would never get through but squeaked out with an A...it really makes you never want to leave your house (you'll understand what i mean soon enough)..and then you realize that your house is probably the least safe place to be..hahahaha...ie..did you know that your kitchen sink has more nasty microbes than your toilet? have fun learning!!!!!!
