  1. Why is it that we arent seeing the media show outrage at our babies having babies...you know, the 14 yr olds who come in having their first...or 18 yr olds on their 3rd.... i think the vast majority of those babes born to older mom's are desperately wanted and will be showered with love... wish i could say the same for the later... seems like our societies energy is focused in the wrong direction....
  2. dentures in a bag of cheetos......
  3. Although I missed the show today, I do know about this issue. I was in South Africa back in 1996. There is no doubt that what is happening to young girls in South Africa is horrific. What I think we need to do is recognize where this behaviour is coming from....from what I understand this is not a pedophilia thing...these are people desperate to be rid of the HIV virus and there is a widespread belief/myth in the country that "having sex" with a virgin will rid you of the disease and save your life. There are two key potential solutions here... the first is EDUCATION...and the second is to make pharmaceuticals available to the people who need them... the reason pharmaceutical companies aren't over there doing more to help is because there is no money in it for them. people can't get meds to help them and they get desperate in horrific ways...this is one of the worst tragedies of all.... we are losing a whole generation of africans to this disease and the world has basically stuck their head in the sand... re the issue of "men" raping children. I worked for CFS in canada for a short time (although it felt like way too long)..that is the equivalent of DSS in the states...and I did care for infants and toddlers who were the victims of sexual abuse...in the pedophilia sense of the term...it was heartwrenching... an incident involving a baby is why I left the job.. just too much to take in day after day..... i read once that in north america 1 in 4 women and girls will be sexually abused in their life time... could you imagine on a world wide scale?.... food for thought.. glad this issue is being talked about...
  4. i think its important to point out though, that most students arent left alone to manage a patient. not when i was a labour and delivery student last year anyways... we were teamed with a buddy nurse and they would double check our findings when reading the tracings or what not... during our whole summer rotation there was only one patient who didnt want students.. but she was also giving the doc intructions about where she wanted her c section incision so she could still wear a bikini, so i dont think she is representative of the whole..hahaha...

  6. hey..something i actually know something about... i have had about 10 colposcopies in the last few years...in my experience a biopsy of tissue is not needed every time a colposcopy is done...typically it is the same routine as a normal pap except they place some lovely binocular looking things where the sun dont shine... just to get a better look at the cervix...they place acetic acid (i think- aka vinegar) on your cervix because it makes the cells white and helps them visualize it better...this stings a bit but isnt bad...the times they did do a biopsy it just felt like good pinch and then i had cramping for the remainder of the day and spotting... i also ended up having the laser surgery to deal with the dysplasia..that was fine too...the part that didnt feel too hot was getting the needle in my cervix...then there's the joy of seeing smoke come from places you never knew it good...hahahaha.. best of luck to your sister in law... if she is concerned, take a mild pain reliever about a half hour before her appt... take care.
  7. try having him try to drown cheerios in the toilet.. better explain that a little better... throw a couple cheerios in the toilet and have him aim at them with his stream of urine to try to sink them... makes it a bit fun for him....and keeps the stream in the toilet...

I am still a student so dont have much experience.I have 3 months to go and have completed a labour and delivery clinical...I want to work in l+d and from what i have seen..the docs do very little, except where there is complications... the nurse pretty much runs the show for the whole labour..and the docs seem to pop in to help ease the baby out...once you are in school you will be amazed to learn how incredibly educated, competent and skillful nurses are and just how much they do in this specialty area... just my opinion... if a baby is going to come and the doc is there...no amount of insistence from a nurse is going to keep it there... there is no choice but to deliver it if no one is there...
  9. I would weed out this "friend"...slowly cut off contact with her... but i would pursue the breach of confidentiality with the lab...to ensure this lab doesnt reveal personal info about patients ever again...
  10. we need a balanced approach... i dont think it should be nurses offering counselling because most havent been trained in counselling techniques... and there are the realities of not enough time to provide it even if we were trained... in canada the system is inundated and only the most ill patients get admitted and for every other mental health service there seems to be a huge waiting list.. greater accessibility to counselling by trained professionals is a must, along with medication when it is deemed necessary..just my opinion

I can identify... i am in my final year of nursing school.. you should have seen our group when we started...we were shaking like leaves when were about to give our first SC injection...now we come flying at people like ninja nurses with darts...you get over it and it comes with practice..i am not even done school yet and i am totally fine with the needle thing... you'll be just fine.."stab" away...
  15. yes i would. after being date raped 5 years ago I went to the emergency room to get the "morning after pill". (it was the weekend and all clinics were closed). I didnt tell the truth to the nurses and doctors because i didnt want to get the police involved. anyways, to try to make a long story short. i was treated horribly by the physician, he cast judgement upon me and was very hurtful. he initially refused to provide the prescription, but then when i explained the time frame involved and that i needed it, he reluctantly provided the prescription. i have never been more humiliated. i am not a judgemental person to begin with, but after that day i vowed never to cast my judgement and beliefs onto a patient and make them feel the way i did. just my two cents.
