Aloha everyone, Im currently living and going to school (pre-nurse) in Hawaii and Im thinking about applying to Medical College of GA and/or Emory. Ive heard good things about their BSN programs so Ive decided to go to GA in December to visit their campuses (I have family in Lawrenceville). Are there any other schools that I should consider? Also, whats there to do for fun? Im thinking its gonna be a whole lot diff than HI. I just want to try something diff. Ive lived in HI my whole life, and I haven't really experienced the mainland. Anyway, please reply with any info. BTW, Im male, and would appreciate a mans pt of view of the nursing programs in GA. (such as, where do all the cute famales attend nursing school?) haha, j/j... Aloha, Brandon...
Please don't hesitate to give me advice, esp. for the last question

I work at MCG. I can't imagine leaving Hawaii to come here! I like it here....I've lived here my entire life.....but I'm sure it doesn't compare.
What do you do at MCG?

A lot depends on how much you want to pay for school. Emory is a very expensive private school. I think it is close to $30 K per year for tuition. If you work there, you can go to school free, but otherwise, you are out a lot of money! I have been out of Ga. for about 7 years, but I had good expereinces with RN's from Kennesaw, Ga. State, Dekalb....altho I think some of the names of schools have changed. If you are going to live near Lawrenceville, you are fairly well located for a lot of good schools. Good luck.

I totally agree with DixieLee! Kennesaw State University has a great program. It's tough to get into but, it's got a great rep. Emory is a GREAT school but, it's not very cost effective-of course after living in Hawaii, maybe not so bad since the cost for housing is definitely cheaper. I've lived in Hawaii and lived in Atlanta, each has positives. LOTS of night life in ATL-Buckhead, Little Five Points, Virginia Highlands are all great places to go. Also, look for music midtown festival info on the web-BIG concert series that happens every spring.
Aloha and good luck!
Thanks guys, I never considered Kennesaw, but I think I'll definitely check it out when I get to GA. I don't want to sound dumb, but do people surf there? Some one told me you can, but I wan't sure if they were screwing with me...
You would have more luck surfing the net, but yes, Georgia does have a coastline. My daughter lived in Savannah/Tybee Island for a few years, and her husband did have a surfboard, and I know he did surf some. I think it may have been before and after hurricanes, but it is possible. It is about a 4 hour drive from Atlanta, a nice little roadtrip. Good luck. You will find the cost of living reasonable, the weather mild and the people friendly. I miss a lot about Atlanta....but NOT the traffic!
LOL I fear you're going to be in shock about the coast here and the attire. Don't plan on wearing your best Aloha shirt to an interview, that won't cut it. The shore here is more like Lani Kai on the calmest day so don't expect to catch a big wave unless a hurricane is coming and then, you won't want to be near the beach.
Also, not so good chinese food and NO Zippy's so if you love Saimen or good chinese-be careful. Best chinese in Atlanta is in Marietta "House of Chang". I have to tell you, it was a shock not to get a manapua or saimen when I was craving it! No seeds!! I do get my coffee shipped in from HI! Just a few more things you need to get connections back home for!
Aloha!

I worked in Hawaii & Tahiti & Bora Bora aboard cruise ships and believe me the South Pacific and Atlantic Ocean are no comparison. The Atlantic is not BLUE!! It is BROWN!! I got spoiled being in the South Pacific & Caribbean that I do not go to the Atlantic Ocean. Also, as another posted, the ocean is not very close to Atlanta because it is located near the middle of the state, more north. Only so-called man made beaches - little ones at parks, such as Lake Lanier.
However, the cost of living is cheaper in the suburbs of Atlanta. If you try to live downtown Atlanta, it will be expensive. Check out the apartments in the suburbs.
