IEN as a student nurse

Published

Hi,

Can an IEN work as a student nurse/PSW or Aide while waiting for CNO to fully assess one's credential? I guess it depends on the employer right but do you know anybody who has gone that route while waiting for the assessment process? Thanks for taking time to read my thread. Hope someone will reply to this. Thanks again!

How are you planning on working as a student nurse? What sort of permit/visa are you looking at? To work in the healthcare you need a medical and a permit and employer, if you are outside Canada looking to work, needs to prove that they are unable to employ a citizen or PR to do the job.

Thanks Silverdragon for the reply. Actually, I am already here in Canada and have a PR Visa. So is it possible that I could work as a PSW/Student Nurse? Thanks for your reply.

I doubt that you'd be hired as a STUDENT nurse, as those "employed nursing student" positions are allocated to actual students attending local universities. With a PR visa you could work as a PSW or aide, but they don't pay all that well.

thanks janfrn for your input. i dont mind the low pay, what i am after is the experience. as of student nurse, i am pretty sure i will be going back to school to take the bridging course since i am an IEN. thanks again for your reply! take care you guys.

I don't know that the bridging course would make you eligible for the ENS positions. Bridging courses tend to be fairly short in duration and the available positions will be filled by students who are in a four year programme. In Alberta, the programme is as follows:

Undergraduate Nursing Employee (UNE)

Nursing students who have satisfactorily completed all the requirements of their third year of an educational program leading to a baccalaureate degree in Nursing and who continue to be enrolled in that program can apply for Undergraduate Nursing Employee (UNE) positions.

The UNE utilizes the nursing process and learned clinical skills to provide a range of patient/client care services specific to the assigned care area or program. The UNE contributes to the healthcare team to ensure that factors impacting the patient/client's treatment plan and recovery are addressed.

UNE positions are available each summer in all sites and sectors of Alberta Health Services. UNEs are also hired in the fall to support the Influenza Immunization Campaign.

Thanks janfrm, your info is appreciated.

I think my only option is to do the bridging full time and see where it goes from there :)

Thanks much and have a great day!
