Ideas for possible H1B position

Hi everyone,

I'm on a student visa working as an RN on MedSurg with OPT which expires in April. I have a BSN and a BS and MS in chemistry all of which I earned in this country. Since most RN positions don't qualify for the H1B visa, I'd like to try and get a position that could. Any suggestions on what kind of postitions I should try for would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks everyone!

Even if you look at another possibility in staying with H1b there is still no guarantee that you will get one due to the high demand and that visas are usually gone in hours and you can't start working straight away

Let me give you an update on how things are done with visas here. Next application open window for the H1-B is the first week of April for a start date in October. If you would be one of the lucky ones to get the H1-B, you are unable to remain in the US for the six months for that visa to become current.

You have only 60 days past when you complete the OPT to remain in the US. With an expiration date of April, this is something that needed to be done when the last petitions were accepted in October for an April start date.

But they have been getting more than 150,000 petitions in just a few hours each time, and there are only 65,000 H1-B visas available per year at this time.

Do you already have a Visa Screen Certificate in hand as well?

My understanding was that there was no cap on H1B visas for academic institutions. The hospital that I work for falls under this umbrella. This being the case, I believe that H1B can be filed at anytime - no?

Suzanne,

Yes, I already have the visa screen certificate.

You came here aaking about what job that you could do, and if you were at a facility that could sponsor you for the H1-B; do not think that you would be here posting about what type of job that you could get. Please be aware that even though that facility may be exempt from the cap, the visa also requires that the job require a BSN for entry level to that job, and most nursing jobs that you could get with the experience that you have would not fall under this requirement.

Next issue is that the visa documentation is usually not able to be completed immediately by the attorney, there is quite a bit of work that needs to be done. And you must have that visa in your hands before 60 days are exhausted after you have completed your OPT, or you will not be able to remain in the US. Being sponsored for the H1-B visa does not permit you to remain in the US while it is being completed.

Suzanne,

I was asking for ideas for other hospital positions other than perhaps bedside nursing that require a bachelor's degree which I could pursue based on my other qualifications (eg: I have a background in research and teaching). However, I didn't know that I couldn't remain here while the paperwork for the H1B was being processed. It's good to know that. Thanks Suzanne.

You are going to need to check around with facilities, but it is going to be quite hard for you to get an H1-B visa in any case. But at this point in time, all is going to have to be done out of the US.
