Ideas for community nursing clinicals

Published

Hey, all! My instructor has asked us for a list of ideas for clinical experience within the community, such as spending a day at Red Cross. I thought of the usual health fair booth, but I am having trouble with thinking of other ideas. Any suggestions? Thanks!:nurse:

Flu shot clinic, health screenings...maybe since it's October you could have a clinic to teach self breast examinations for women?

Our class is all over this term:

--leading a project to increase childhood vaccinations

--last year, a group partnered with a local community clinic and opened a health clinic for the homeless

--making policy recommendations for county public health agency

--designing a diabetes case management model for a local community clinic

--leading a project for the local suicide task force

--going with home health care RN as she visits new teen mothers

There's lots to do...

My community clinical group worked at an organization which helps homeless in my city. We ran a clinic of sorts in the parking lot where we checked BPs, did foot care (i.e. we let them soak their feet in warm water with epsom salt then checked pulses), and provided basic first aid. Granted we had a medical van to work out of as this organization and my clinical instructor are working to actually establish a nurse run clinic there. It was a great experience and I know our clients really appreciated visiting with us, getting clean socks and hygiene kits.

Specializes in Hospital Education Coordinator.

call the Education depts at local hospitals to see if they need help for job fairs, competency testing (you could not do the checkoff but could assist with registration, set up, etc). Also, school nurses in my area call me (Educator at a hospital) for posters on PTA nights or faculty meetings. I allow students to put up posters for staff to read and comment upon. Helps us all. In my BSN program we visited a women's shelter (any shelter would do) and discussed info on general hygiene, Hepatitis, flu, HIV, preventing pregancy---whatever was current. We later provided the shelter with a book on resources in the community for everything from transportation to medication purchase assistance. You would need to talk to the residents first to get an assessment of their needs.

Hi traumaRUs, I know this post is old, but I was wondering who you contacted to do ride alongs for your community health clinicals. I will be doing community health soon and ride alongs sound very interesting. Thanks!
