I work in LTC, I want to get a hospital cna job..

Hi everyone, so I have been at my current cna job (ltc facility) for about 7 months, and I want to transfer to a hospital. I feel like this is kind of a silly question, but I'm not sure how to tell my current employer/coworkers that I am looking for a different job. Some of the job applications require references by current/former supervisors only. I am guessing that I should use the RNs I work under as references, but I just feel rude asking them to vouch for me knowing that I won't be working there anymore. (the main reason I want to get a hospital job is because they pay much better, and I'm trying to move out of my parent's house, but that just won't happen if I continue to work at the ltc place). Is there a polite way to go about this, or is this just a feeling I have to get over? I just feel extremely guilty for leaving my current employer because all the people I work for are wonderful, but at the same time I need more money, and I've also always wanted to work at a hospital. Any advice?

Well you could tell your current employer you are applying for a per diem job at the hospital so you can pick up some extra money and ask them for a letter of reference. That way perhaps the hospital wouldn't call for a reference.

When I was still in LTC, every RN I used for references when I applied for hospital jobs wanted to work at a hospital too.

I know exactly how you feel, but you do have to get over it. Your reasons for wanting a new job, while not actually anyone's business, are totally kosher. People change jobs all the time; there's nothing to feel guilty about.

Don't feel any remorse. Just apply away. If they ask, tell them its PRN or days you have scheduled off. I've got app's in for about a dozen different hospital jobs. In my experience (and from what i've been told) hospitals will put 'now hiring' ads up, but only fill them when they are forced too. Out of all the hospitals jobs i've applied to, i've only been called for one interview. Didn't get the job, so I just call it 'interview training'. Live and learn.

And before you go after the dream job at the hospital, go visit some and maybe chat with the CNA's there to get 'the truth' about teamwork and workload. If the HR people say '8 patients per CNA', odd's are they are lying. lol. Unless you count the beds, and count the CNA/PCT's.
