I want my old job back!

I worked in CV-ICU until 2 weeks ago. I was working nights and although I love the work and the people, the shift wasn't working out.

On impulse and frustration, I bid on a job in PACU. I got the job, and I don't see it working out for me. I've been there 2 weeks, and already I've had 2 small run-ins with my new boss. I really don't like her!

I've been in touch with my old boss, and she would love to have me back.

Problem is, my new boss can keep me for 6 months if she wants to. She is very much a 'by the book' nurse, and I don't think she'll let me go.

What should I put as the reason for my request for transfer? I don't know what to put, keeping in mind I might be stuck there for 6 months.

Any advice?

Wait out the six months (endure it), then put down that you feel the other unit is a better fit for you. You know you are welcome back so you will get help with your transfer back. That knowledge should ease some apprehension and help you put up with the situation while the six months goes by. Good luck.

I had the same situation last summer. I went from NICU to ER days... Didn't work for me, so 4 weeks into orientation I spoke with the manager, told her that ER wasn't for me, and that I needed to go back to NICU, which was my passion, because I can't do a job I'm not passionate about. I also told her that I realized that the ER had made an investment in me, and I was committed to staying out my 1 year. I asked if she would release me from orientation, and she did. There is a policy at my hospital that says that the employee/employer has a 180-day probation period where either the manager can "fire" you, or you can move somewhere else if it's not a good "fit"...I was still on orientation, so I was able to do this.... Thank you Steve and Cali, your replies are helpful, and I appreciate you both taking the time to respond to my question.

That's what I love about this forum, it's such a nice thing to have nurses out there who know exactly what I'm going through and who offer support, it makes me feel less alone in my predicament!

I found moving from ICU to PACU a little trying at first as the mind set and clinical thinking pathways are very different. After a few months thing began to sink in and I have stayed in PACU for over a decade. Give it some time unless it is a complete misfit with your manager. If it is a misfit then see if you can work out a release from the balance of the 6 month period. Most senior managers I have worked with will gladly waive that type of restriction in order to retain a good employ with in the institution.

Just make sure you really want to go back. Most of us hate change and when we are introduced to a new environment or people we naturally want to go back to what is familiar to us.

If you truly hate the new unit, then tell your new unit manager you want to go back. If she has any idea what she is doing she will release you. It will be less of a headache for both of you in the long run.
