I want to be a Nurse in VA Beach!

Hi Everyone,

After a few months of reading your posts and getting great information and even better answers I've worked up the nerve to ask a few questions of my own. I'm not that great with computers so please be kind.. I live in Virginia Beach VA and would really like to go to nursing school. I get great joy caring for others. I've been out of school so long that the process is very frustrating and makes me feel overwhelmed at times! I've been given my spouses GI Bill money to go to school but because I've been out so long I don't know if I should try and become an LPN because of the short years, or RN of the money. I'm told it's a big difference in pay. I don't even know what school is best for me here in VA Beach..... Can anyone give me a clue?

Sorry, can't help you, but have to say.. My family took a vacation to Virginia Beach this summer and was the best vacation ever. Love it, love it, love it.

You are never "to old" to return to school. If you really want it, go for it.

If you go to the website of the Virginia Board of Nursing ... and explore that site's web pages related to education ... you will find lists of all the approved nursing programs in Virginia. The lists include all types of nursing programs. Then you can start exploring the websites of those programs (and maybe make a few phone calls requesting information) to find out what those programs require, how much they cost, etc.

You might also want to do some volunteer work in a local hospital or long term care facility to find out if you like being in a health care environment. That experience might also give you a chance to meet some nurses and ask them some questions about the local schools -- as well as ask them about their roles, the differences between the jobs of LPN's and RN's, etc.

As you start to get a sense of what you want -- then you can start narrowing down the list of schools to just those that offer the type of program you want for a reasonable price.

Check out the Sentara College of Health Professions in Chesapeake, VA. I graduated as an RN from their program in 2000, and there are many different tracks you can take to get your RN. I did a 13-month LPN-RN bridge program and was very happy with my decision to go there. This might be an option if you want to go ahead and get some experience under your belt before applying to RN school. It also depends on what path in nursing you're looking to take....many positions require an RN degree (i.e. labor & delivery, ICU). My sister-in-law is a recent graduate of their RN program as well.
