I could use some advice on when to start job hunting.

Published

Hello! I am currently an LPN student who will graduate on August 25th 2013. My husband is getting out of the Navy next month and has accepted a job in Richmond, VA which is about two hours from where we currently live.

So my question is, how soon is too soon to start applying for jobs? Does the fact that I don't currently live where I'll be working factor into it? And is it unusual to start looking for a job before I actually have passed my NCLEX? Any advice you have for a brand new nurse would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

Will you be looking for a job in the same state in which you graduate? If not, you will need to investigate the most effective way to obtain your license in that state. Each state has a different set of rules about working as a 'new grad' before you are actually licensed so contact the BON in that state to find out what you will need to do.

Likewise, employers have different attitudes about hiring new grads - you'll need to talk to them to find out whether they hire anyone pre-NCLEX. It's always kind of dicey, because once a person fails NCLEX, they can no longer work as a 'licensed' nurse - can only work as an unlicensed tech or NA until they pass NCLEX. Many organizations are not willing to take that chance.

Congratulations on your accomplishments. Best wishes for your exciting new life with your hubby.

Thank you for the help! I will be working in the same state where I am getting my license, so that alleviates some of the pressure. I'll check with employers about what their policies are regarding hiring pre-licensure.
