I don't let if phase me any longer...the type casting... I'll just do my job the best that I can and not be defined by narrow parameters society has regarding our profession. Even female nurses are barraged by preconceived ideas the public has regarding what a good nurse should or should not do, act or say.
yep, my hubby is a nurse also and he's heard them all too...why didn't you keep teaching english? you have a masters in social work but you still became a nurse?!? why didn't you just go to med school?? he has now gotten to the point where he basically ignores people who make judgements about him and concentrates on doing what he does best-being an excellent, caring person who happens to be a rn.
My day is made when I find out am assigned to work on the same cath. lab. team with our departments only male nurse. We have fun and tease each other all day, just as friends. The day flys by and our patients know they are getting great care. The patients never say anything about him being male or me being female or that he's in his 30's and I am in my 50's. Doesn't matter who our third team member is the day just rocks!

"male nurses are gay."
"male nurses couldn't get into medical school so they became nurses instead."
etc, etc.......today i went to see a home care pt and her daughter was there......daughter is in her 50's, i would guess. mom had just gotten out of the hospital and said something about having had a male nurse. daughter said:
"i was so surprised to see so many male nurses working at the hospital. are there so many of them because not enough women want to be nurses anymore?"
after i picked my jaw up off the floor i had to bite my tongue.......
