the rate should be determined by the md but 100cc typically goes in over an hour...thus 100cc/hr...to be confirmed w/md or pharmacist.
I dunno what planet has a MD that calculates safe rates for every med (most don't have a clue how fast to give Potassium), but I do know that 99.999937658% of med orders.
How fast do you push Lasix?....look it up and be surprised...ever see an MD order for how fast to NOT make a pt deaf?
That covers the legal aspect of the order; nurses are the ones that have to have a brain and actually ascertain if it's piggyback or push. If you are an RN and can't read and interpret the recommended nursing implication portions of a med book as for administer over xxx times....then shame on ya!!
If you have a RN behind your name...you are held to a slightly different standard and you have to use your brain for more than keeping your neck wet. When wa the last time you gave Toradol to a person with a creat of >1.2 and no doc (or you) ever bothered to check labs?
