I think it depends on the facility. There is a CNA that works in our nursery, but her main role is to put together charts, help with circumcisions, arrange the PKU lab draws, etc. If she's free to help with the babies she does, but that's not her main role.
We don't have any LPNs, except one who has been there for 34 years and was grandfathered in before they stopped hiring LPNs for our floor. The best advice I can give you is to ask around.
Our mom/baby unit is staffed by RN's They have a float unit clerk that is shared with M/S and she comes up to help put charts together or run errands if they are swamped but that isn't her main role and she is shared with M/S.
The only department that uses LPN's is our M/S floor. We have 1 in the ER but her role is actually a tech, not an LPN.
We have CNA working in our nursery. THey do vitals, feed and basically take care of the babies in the nursery. Some of the better ones will help take babies out if it is feeding time. I work 11-7 and all of our assessments are done in the nursery, so not to keep parents awake. Rn's do the blood work, TCB's and antibodics if needed. They also help us by ordering labs. WE also have LpN's in postpartum and they are assigned to mom and baby. They are responsible, same as RN's in postpartum.
We also have an LPN that was "grandfathered in" she's been working in our unit for almost 25 yrs. They stopped hiring LPN's because we are a smaller unit that needs to have everyone cross trained to do Labor.
We do have a tech that works when we are busy but it's a seasonal job pretty much only summer here, some holidays when she's home from college.
