I have a question about Nursing specialites.

Published

I was wondering, hoe exactly do you go about getting a nursing specialty?

I am interested in the surgical nurse spec. does this nurse make incisions, or what does this nurse do, im confused!

Can i get into a nursing specialty with an ADN or do i have to get my BSN?

What specialties are in high demand?

And is it extreamly hard to become a surgical nurse, is it one of the tougher ones?

Give me some insight! thanks !!

After graduating with an RN whether it be ASN or BSN, you can go to any specialty you want (barring it does not require an advanced degree). Becoming a surgical nurse is not any harder to do than becoming a med/surg nurse. Job selection really depends most upon where you live, what the local demands are and if you are willing to relocate. I will say that knowing a good hoe will get you into some specialties faster than others:D

surgical nurse as in the perioperative specialty?

These nurses function in the role of scrub or circulating nurse- they do not get to make incisions.

Many hospitals offer new grad internships in a wide array of specialties. Research the specialty well and know the basics of those duties before you decide which one you wish to make into a career.

Good luck!

in our situation, the surgical nurse has to work in the surdical wards or assist in OR as circulating nurse. You are not allowed to make incisions.I would prefer to be in aneasthetic side.Make a good research and make choice yourself

Specializes in O.R., ED, M/S.

There is a big difference in being an OR nurse vs a MedSurg nurse. After graduation from school you pretty much take your knowledge right into M/S nursing. OR nursing is a different matter. It can become very intense at times and takes a rather thick skin to do it. Go to the OR forum and seek out answers there. Probably OR nursing is the hardest to accomplish but can with determination. Good luck

I completely disagree with this statement. Right now because of the deficiencies of nursing school you can find an orientation program in many hospitals that will prepare you for work on the floor you are interested in. Regardless if it is med/surg, OR/surgical, ER, even open heart recovery. To be a nurse you have to have 'thick skin' no matter where you are. There are always going to be times that you feel your life is more stressful and intense than a nurse working somewhere else. Trust me, you are wrong. To the original poster, you can work anywhere you want to. Your success however, will always depend on dedication and determination.
