I had the perfect Clinical Rotation for med surg-2

this clinical rotation have been such a breeze for me. i know a couple of months ago i wined about 2 students to one pt. however things changed and i did get my experience of taking care of my own pt. :redbeathe

anyway.... i had the most nicest instructor. we were not stressed, she was so easy going and i learned a lot from her.

not only did she make sure we did well in clinicals but she made an effort to help us in theory also. in post conference she would give us practice nclex exams and we would go over it as a class, this really helped. she would also dismiss us 4-5 hours early from clinicals, this really helped because we were able to study for the remainder of the day. many of you may be thinking that we did not get any experience but we did. the floor we was on was very slow so i could not imagine staying there 9 hours anyway. we did our meds, am care, treatments, and etc. and by noon we were off the floor. now of course other students don't know about this but i can truly say that we all weren't complaining.

this was just a very smooth and easy going clinical rotation. so glad i had her to be my instructor.

ok - I was not there but I do have a comment. The amount of time you spend on the floor is generally mandated by the state. Therefore you were cheated out of time and the instructor may have gotten paid for the whole day. Another thing, nurses should never be bored. There is always something to be done. Why didn't she get on the phone and call around to see who was getting blood, or needed IV's or some other learning opportunity? I think you will regret the "Nice" teacher when you go to work and realize you were shortchanged.

I can see exactly where you are coming from. What can I do about it now ? The clinicals are over for this class.

I still feel like I did alot. Gave meds, hung piggy backs, documented in pts. chart, did pt. teaching, wrote two careplans, suctioning, assessing, talking c- doctors, encouraging pts. families, although my hours were cut really short I still learned alot. This was a very small unit, us students took up the majority of the pts. so staying all day would of really been a night mare. Most of the pts. were not really that sick, and they could do for them self. I had pts. with really minor problems. One had N/V/D, and two of them had UTI's. By time 9'clock came we were just kind of standing around. I kept begging the nurses and techs to call me if they needed help or if something else exciting was going on but there was nothing. For a tech to refuse help you know there is not much to do. :icon_roll

that's great that your ci did so much to help you guys in theory. i've heard about instructors who actually do things like that. we came off the floor around 2-3 for post conference which was usually something to do with the color of underwear (excuse me the student nurse handbook states white or fleshtone-i've got on white tyvm as does everyone else), how much the ci hated this job, or some such nonsense.

count yourself lucky in that respect. i'm a tad jealous, but i passed lecture and clinical!!! yippee!!!!
