I am a new LVN graduate and would like to know if its possible to land a hospital job

Published

I am a new LVN/LPN from Texas. I am currently in the process of getting the ACLS certification. In the future (many years from today after I become a RN BSN and move on to MSN) my dream would be to work in the Emergency Room or in the operating room with patients in severe conditions. High paced and very busy is what I am looking for. I would love to help those that are in need of critical help.

What should be the first job I should try to get into? I want to become a great nurse and am trying to get many certifications. I am reading and studying daily even though I am not in school.

Yes, it's possible to work in a hospital as a new grad LVN. However, what types of hospital jobs that are available to LVNs will vary depending on the facility. Some hospitals are moving away from hiring LVNs while others limit them to positions in long-term/rehab areas or outpatient clinics, yet other facilities welcome them with open arms on almost any unit. As I'm not in Texas, I can't tell you exactly where to go though, but definitely start looking at your local hospital websites.

Best of luck with your search!

Hospitals in many areas of the state (outside large urban areas) still utilize LVNs - particularly in rural hospitals. I have also heard of some larger hospitals that are beginning to explore different staffing models in order to decrease cost without affecting the number of care givers. Obviously, these changes will mean moving away from 100% RN staffing models, so your job availability may improve over time.
