I could not believe this student I had the other night. I picked up a shift on my old unit (telemetry) and the charge asked me if I minded having a student with me as his preceptor had called off sick. Ofcourse not! I love having students. So, I grab my MAR's, Kardexes and tell him we are going to check them over for mistakes. This usually takes about 30 minutes. In that time, NO LIE, he got 2 text messages and an actual phone call. All of which he took.
When I was done I said are you ready? (I will admit, this was said through clenched teeth) and he said, Yeah. CHECKED HIS PHONE ONE MORE TIME:angryfire Then I said, Good. Because the FIRST thing your going to do is take that phone out of your pocket, put it in your coat and leave it there for the rest of the shift.
OMG! I mean, I will call my husband during my break, but I can't think of anyone I need to talk to while I am at work. It was SOOOO inappropriate. Has anyone else encountered anything like this?
I worked with a nurse (let's call her nutty nora - she has a similar name she insists we call her). I thought I was hallucinating the other night when I noticed she was on the cell phone immediately after report. She sat at the desk (I couldn't help but notice since my two patients were immediately to her left) and spoke on the phone for over 1 hour. She is, as am I, a prn floater and I noticed the charge watching her as well.
Finally she got up and went into her patient's rooms.... the other nurse on our side made a face at me and we both laughed....we shared our concerns with each other (she is giving the rest of us a bad reputation).... then she came out of the rooms, picked up her cell and got back on it.
I was really busy so I can't account for her next five - six hours....the other RN and I found ourselves going into the med room together --AND THE GIRL WAS ON THE WALL PHONE IN THERE! No one uses that phone - it makes you stand directly in front of PYXIS!
For some reason, I started to laugh - then the other RN started to laugh. I said excuse me, got the Pyxis going and she stood on my left on the phone... the charge came in - took one look and left in disgust.
I wonder if the woman still works at the facility - OF COURSE SHE DOES!!

I have many co-workers that are on their phones many times throughout the day. They absolutely leave their cell phones in their pockets. Many of them are travel nurses. I don't know if that somehow gives them some type of an exemption. Although, I have worked through both travel agencies and regular nursing agencies and no one told me about it. Our secretaries will talk on the hospital phone taking personal calls for hours.... These are not students. I'm not sure why this is becoming such a problem. I think people are just addicted to staying "connected" via phone, internet, whatever. I don't think it's a problem confined to student nurses.
