I need to volunteer with hospice.

Good morning,

I need some help. Does anyone out there work in hospice that has some volunteer opportunities in the Dallas area? I need to log some hours in the next month and the program I have been trying to get in touch with is not panning out. I need this experience for one of my nursing classes. Any info or contacts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

Hi, Matt--

My certification is actually in hospice and palliative care--and I live just north of Dallas. I actually work at Presby of Dallas. Shoot, we could be neighbors!

There is a meeting once a month of the Dallas hospice nurses association (I never remember the acronym). It is free, you can meet some people who know, work for, etc. a lot of local hospices, get about 1 to 1.5 hours of continuing ed (you can never know enough!), and a supper.

It is in the interns classroom at Presbyterian Hospital, in the Fogelson Forum building. I think it is actually this Thursday evening.

I'll send you a PM or email and give you the contact email address. I know they will love to have you!

On the alternative, although I think you'll really enjoy those meetings, you can pretty much call up any hospice and volunteer. They are by federal law (Medicare?) required to serve a certain percentage of "pro bono" clients AND required to have a certain percentage of volunteer hours every month, relative to the hours of paid employees.

Hope that helps--if not, please feel free to email me:
