I need to know the truth about salaries.

Hi everyone,

I need to know the truth about how much a new R.N would make in the New York, New Jersey area. ( Staten Island, Brooklyn input would be better) Some of the salaries seemed extremly low, I previously had 20 yrs. exp. in dialysis as a tech. and made 19/hr. does any of my past exp. count, even tho I wasn't an R.N at the time?

The truth is that when you go from a job you worked for 20 years to a different job where you have no experience you might have to take a pay cut.

However the good news is that while you were at the top of the pay scale at your previous job and were never going to make much more, you have a ton of room to grow at your new job as your experience and skills develop.

A quick check on the net going to salary.com shows RN in Brooklyn NY with a median salary of about 76,000 per year. In Norfolk VA it's about 60,000. Thats for a Staff RN. Does previous experience help? Sure, but it may or may not help that much. Larger hospitals are fairly hard wired on their salary scales, but your experience may give you a hand up on a lesser experienced candidate. So 20 years of showing up every day for work makes you a less of a risk than some kid just turned 22 out of school. Hope this helps.
