Hi everyone!
I am planning on applying to the KSU BSN program for summer 2010 and I need some advice. I currently have all A's accept for one B in calc. However, I had a baby last year and took some time off, and I have only been going to school part time (I'm currently at GPC), on average 3 classes a semester. Will that lower my chances of being accepted? Will KSU see me ass a slacker, or will they just look at the fact that I have straight A's? Also, will that one B prevent me from being accepted?
I also would like to know exactly how each semester is. I have two young children who are not in school yet, and I need to if I can put them in a preschool in the morning or are if I need daycare all day. My husbands work schedules changes a lot, so I don't know when exactly he will be working. Can you take classes two or three days a week, or do you have classes every day? Also, does anyone know anything about the online classes they offer? My goal is to go on to get my masters and become a nurse practitioner. Sorry this is such a long post, any information would be appreciated!

I don't think one B is going to prevent you from anything.

I go to KSU. I am only in the first semester though so I can't tell you how its going to be in the next few semesters except for what I hear from other folks in the program. I am also a single mom of two.
First of all, Michigan is supersmart when she says no one cares about your B in calc. Its not even a prereq. I only went to school part time. They don't care about that either. (I had a B+ in A&PI and a B+ in Chem I. 85.9% on TEAS.) Please note that there is an interview process that you can read more about on the Georgia nursing thread.
They look at your grades and your TEAS score. Be sure to get at least 80% on the TEAS.
I take patho online, its hard, and its a lot of work! I am not sure that will help with your schedule. You need a lot of time to post to the discussions in these online classes. Everyone in my class wants to take lecture classes instead!! There is an in class final at the end of October for patho.
The accelerated BSN students I know go to class all day all summer because the semester is so short. The traditionals take 3 classes a semester and acclerateds take 4 each semester.
Basically, I have class three days a week. Tuesday 9-1, Wed for 3 hours, and Friday 8-12 (basically). When clinicals start, Wednesday will basically get longer and earlier. All nursing classes are taught in big chunks of time like this. The traditionals take Holistic on Mondays from 9-1 instead of Tuesdays 9-1 for example.
My advice to you is not to undertake this program unless you can commit a whole bunch of time to it. Its a lot of studying and takes dedication. Its hard to find enough time to study!!
The program is wonderful though!
Please feel free to ask any other questions you would like of me!
Thanks for all the info! Are you in the accelerated or traditional program?
Three days a week for about 4 hours in the morning doesn't sound bad at all. I have taken several classes (not nursing courses of course) online and you are right, they can be difficult. However, they tend to be easier to work into my schedule. I know that I will have to put a lot of time into nursing school, I just decided on becoming a nurse practitioner rather than a doctor because it isn't AS time consuming. I also like the the relationship that nurses have with their patients better.
My husband works full time, so I won't need to work, and I guess I COULD spend all day every day in class had to, it is just really importat to me to be able to spend time with my kids. One of my good friends is an NP (she went to school in California) and she works at a minute clinic in the morning and is home in time to get her kids from school.
I said I have two young children, but what I meant is I WILL have two young children, I am pregnant now. I just found out I'm pregnant, so I expect the baby will be due in June or so. That's really the main reasson I want to start in summer 2010, because I don't think that being pregnant during the interview (which I would be if I applied for next spring) would make a good impression...I don't know, what do you think?
Anyway, I won't have to work and the children, being so young, will go to bed early and nap (my little boy is a big sleeper :wink2:) and my husband will be home in the evenings, so I will have plenty of study time. I just want to make sure that I don't have to actually be IN CLASS all day every day.
Let me know what you think about the interview, and it is great to know that you had a couple B's and still got in, some people have told me that it is just IMPOSSIBLE to get in to KSU. Thanks so much!
Hey-
I am an accelerated student. The traditionals take patho on campus but we take ours online and later on in the semester, we will take research online as well. I think the traditionals actually take that second semester.
According to my friend, the summer semester is really more like 8-4 every single day. (She is accelerated as well but keep in mind that the traditionals will have the same clinical commitments and that is where a lot of time is eaten up.)
For the record, there is a pregnant chick in my class and she had to be showing at the interview. Apparently, lots of folks (1-2 a semester) give
birth in the middle of the semester and keep on going. I have two kids and I think its crazy but hats off to them if they can keep it rolling!
In terms of the interview, they choose who they will interview. You get an appointment and they give you like 20 minutes to answer a series of questions. Its a round table format with three interviewers and you. Search for another thread about KSU because I posted the questions they asked me there. (I forget what they were now!)
I hope that helps. You can always send me an email if you need anything else.
Best of luck to you!

Hey there-
I just got into KSU for Spring 2009 as a traditional student. I am in a situation almost identical to yours, except I have one young child (13 months). I took only one class a semester last year when he was born, then upped it to part-time, then full time over this summer and then this semester. Don't even sweat your B in calc dude...I got a C & D in Calc I & II when I first started college, lol. I also got some bad grades in other classes b/c I was a pre-med major and slacked majorly that first year. I didn't think I'd have a snowballs' chance in hell getting into KSU and here I am!! I still don't believe it. The key is to do super well in all your prereq classes. You can find those on the KSU website. Also, do well on your TEAS. If you buy the study guide and use it, that shouldn't be a problem. I got a 93 on the TEAS and 99th percentile. Being pregnant during the interview shouldn't affect their decision...that's discrimination. Plenty of pregnant or recently pregnant women do all sorts of programs, so if you really want it, you can do it, don't hold off!! FNP was right about the schedule, that is what Fran @ Kennesaw told me to expect also. Keep in mind though that even because classes are only 3 days/week and not 8-5, you will be using a LOT of free time studying. Anyway, I wish you the best of luck getting into KSU. Don't give up, it's not impossible!! My overall college GPA is BARELY a 3.0, and I got in, despite that!:redbeathe
