Dear All nurses, please help me. I live in New Jersey and just passed NCLEX-RN, got license number from BON of NY. Now I want to begin my career by writing resume and find a job. I was a nurse from Taiwan with a college degree and worked as OB/GYN/Pediatrics nurse for one year and then change my career path, come to USA to study computer science with a master of science degree. Now because of many reason, I have to go back to nursing, passed RN and now I have questions in the hope that some one can give me an idea.
1. Do I have to renew my license period of time? How long after I got registration should I renew? Should I work strictly in NY State to get my NY license renewed or any hospital in US will be fine?
2. Because many years passed I do not work in nursing, I want use some resume service in hope of good resume helps, do you think this is logical choose? would some one recommend me one or two reputable services?
3. Because I have to use my foreign nursing degree to find a job which I heard will be quite a challenge, do you think my computer science degree helps? Would some one recommend one or two ways to find a job? should I work part time or full time first? (I can do either one)
Thank you all very much for all your input.

Hi Doreen!
1)You are licensed for life unless your license is revoked for some reason, but in New York you must renew your registration every 3 years if you want to continue to practice nursing. The board of nursing in NY will send you a renewal notice in the mail, but you must tell them if you move. Since you registered as a nurse in NY you can only practice as a nurse in NY state. If you want to accept a job in a different state you will need to apply for registration in that state. There is no national registration in the US, every state has their own registration. It is generally easy to get registered in a second state once you are registered in one state but is takes time and costs money.
2) I think that a resume service might be a good idea since it is clear from your message that you are not a native English speaker. A resume service could help you ensure that your resume and cover letter are grammatically correct and convey the right message. Maybe the school you went to has a career services center that could help you free of charge? Many schools offer this kind of help to their graduates
3) I don't know if your computer degree will help, but hopefully your past nursing experience will help.
Good luck!
Thank you very much that is exactly I wanted to know. :)
And I will keep in mind to renew every 3 years. One know that I will need to do the endorsement to other state and will apply one in NJ...
Thank you again.
