I need some help :)

Hi everyone, I'm looking for some advice from some experienced PP and OB nurses. I am a new nurse (since August) and I have been working in Post Partum/newborn nursery since the end of November. I really have so much I want to know, more I need to know I think. I mean I learn a lot as I go but I'd like to learn much more about things like common stuff to expect after birth (b/c sometimes I staff the admissions nursery so that means getting the babies within a short time after birth) and things to be watchful for. I'd like to learn more about mag patients and other postpartum complications, etc.

So my question is - can you recommend some references? Some websites? Some sources of the information? I've been a member of NANN since September b/c I joined when I was working in a NICU and I do get some information from them, I recently sent in my app for AWHONN also so should be getting some information from there too. Any other suggestions?

AWHONN is a great organization for perinatal nurses, so you have gone to the right place. They also have a wonderful website and a great research journal, JOGNN. You are headed in the right direction!

JOGNN and 'Nursing for Women's Health' (both come with AWHONN membership) are great resources.

You also might want to consider Core Curriculum for Maternal Newborn Nursing by Mattson & Smith. It covers L/D, antepartum, newborn issues, and postpartum/breastfeeding. It's designed to be a study guide for the RNC certification exam in mother-baby but I use it a lot just as a reference. Hope this helps, and kudos to you for wanting to learn more! :)

Thanks for the information all! Now another question LOL, what do you recommend that is an easy read? I'm not a dummy or anything but I loved reading books like blah blah blah made easy or blah blah blah for dummies, LOL, its just an easier and more fun way to keep my attention...any suggestions? Do they have a postpartum nursing made easy?

I really like Maternal-Neonatal Nursing made Incredibly Easy. It gets to the point! Good luck!
